After Hillary we need another woman, a black woman to be President. Her speech the other day in NH articulated what women and girls were thinking after the Trump tapes etc leaked. It needed to be said and she did it so well. However, that shouldn't be the end of the conversation.
She addressed Trump's casual dismissal of sexual assault (and his actual sexual assaults) as a mother of daughters but, more importantly, as a female who knows she lives in a white male patriarchy.
She talked about how females live their day to day lives being the subject of unwanted male attention ie. catcalling or the dude at work that won't leave you alone and as she said 'stands too close.'
If there is any good to come out this terrible time in American politics I hope it starts a more detailed conversation, a more public conversation about women's and girls lives, how much time and energy is drained from us because we have to deal with misogyny directed at us all day, every day.
Think of how much potential is wasted because half the population is consumed with dealing with every day misogyny? How many girls are sexualized by the time they're only 13! Girls mourn their childhood a lot because they remember it as 'the time before' they were stripped of their human dignity.
This election has brought forth a ton of these issues right into the spotlight. They've always existed but they're part of the public consciousness at this moment.
We hear that women can't be leaders, we're bossy, we're shrill. Then we're judged on how fuckable we are to men. We're harassed sexually as soon as we step out the door to simply go to work. Then we go to work and have to deal with 'that guy.' We're dispossessed economically (sexist hiring practices, wage gap, 'women's poverty jobs') and we're dispossessed socially and politically. Think of that video of that white male pastor telling America that 'women aren't supposed to lead over men.'
Before men dismiss this as an anomaly, remember the map showing only male voters and think of how many men are voting for Trump. This is NOT an anomaly. This is the reality of being female in a patriarchy.
I bet Michelle has some great stories from her experiences being the first Black First Lady, especially considering the fact America is still a structurally racist AND misogynist society.
I hope as the months pass, she'll open up about what the past 8 years were like for her and her two daughters, intersecting race and sex. After all, intersectionality is precisely about African American women and their struggles with race, class and sex.
If Michelle was running, I'd be voting for her.
