I just read that the average cost of a wedding in the USA now is $32,641.00. Figure that most of that gets paid by the man, and that does not include other expenses like jewelry.

This cost would cover years and years of medical insurance premium. Invested, that money would over 40 years probably finance a big chunk of a reasonably decent retirement, if you left it alone.
