How many elections have you been through out of curiousity?

This is nothing new. The only difference now is the internet age, which allows people to further entrench themselves in group think than ever before. Previously we mostly had a few news sources that people collectively drew from, leaning various ways. Now with the net people don't need to vet ideas and thoughts through neighbours or the people around them, you can fully explore any insane thought with like minded people around the world without negative feedback.

But make no mistake, this kind of crazy is nothing new.

confirmation bias isn't new....and yes we've always had the anti-science bible thumpers and fringe conspiracy theorists. but don't you think the fact that the majority of Republican voters reject the concept of global warming is uniquely terrifying?
