I always referred to women as females. I don't know when that started and I just recently found out it's offensive. I'm a female. I've had people respond assuming I'm a man b/c I use that term.

I recall seeing men complaining online about being called "males" or "white males" (" 'White male WHAT' ; horses? Dogs?" etc, was a common rejoinder) by liberals/feminists (this was before SJW was a term) ; this was circa 2002-2004 or so. I'm guessing the whole "Female" thing started as a tit for tat thing back then, and it's just become a habit now.
