I guess that's something I took for granted / never noticed. Most of the major retailers tend to have them in there so I forget that isn't common place everywhere.

Awesome. Never made sense to me why baby changer stations weren't in men's rooms. Single fathers exist and go places, least of all?

[–]TheAmazingChinchillaImagine a world without white hetero cis male protagonists 21

Not just single dads but also gay men who have children. This is a step forward on that front too.

Also, men who travel with adult's with disabilities who have incontinence issues.

Edit to add that this is even a bigger issue because commonly, even with a female present, the male is more likely to be able to lift this person and assist in changing.

I think I actually vaguely recall seeing one of them in a men's room when I was a kid, but I could be mistaken. They aren't a common sight.

I've seen it like, once. Thats it

Interesting. As the article notes, they've become relatively common in the UK over my lifetime.

Single fathers have it worse, but any father might be in a shopping mall with a baby.

[–]nuclearneo577The sword that smites MRAs

There actually is a baby changing station in the men's bathroom where I work, and since it's the only public restroom that I use often I kinda of forgot that it wasn't a common thing.

It definitely depends on the area. I live in a well into middle class to upper middle suburb and ever place I go that you may expect parents with kids to be at has a men's room with a baby changing station.

I think some areas probably are lagging, but it's gradually becoming standard.

And like, maybe Mom doesn't want to be the only one changing diapers all the time, y'know?

Because changing a babys dipper has been seen as a womes job since the existance of gender roles.

"FUCK BETA MEN GET JACKED WOMEN ALWAYS CHEAT ON YOU"

Yup, keep waiving your mens rights flags there while real issues pretaining to men are being discussed and enacted, y'all.

EDIT: phrasing.

Yeah, I never understood this. They really aren't for men's "rights" at all. They have some toxic sense of masculinity.

[–]ZemedelphosSecret Sneeple Shill | Social Justice Road Warrior level 2 0

It's like any reactionary group. They hear "elevate women to equality" and think "they're going to drag all men down as low as I treat them". Ergo, any women's rights progression is stupid and sexist, but let me put on my "I'm upset people say men can't get raped" disguise and tell anyone who speaks in any way dismissively to me that they're, and here's the part where the irony kicks in, just butthurt.

and think "they're going to drag all men down as low as I treat them"

Which is frightening to think that they know women are lower on the totem pole in the patriarchy we have set up, and they fear being lowered to that, but also deny women have any problems in our society. As those guys if they would ever trade places with a woman if she has it so damned well.

Brilliant news for dads everywhere. I don't know why this wasn't done sooner, but I'm happy it's been done now. I feel like I want to savour every piece of good news I can at the moment.

I gather that the synecdochical use of toilets as a stand-in for restrooms is a British thing? But that's somewhat confusing, because don't they use 'loo'? I mean they're not intending to mount diaper changing stations on the actual toilet, right? Though that does make it more efficient. Shit AND change your baby's diaper at the same time.

Loo is a class and region specific term; 'toilet' is the most neutral term, and refers to the entire room as well as to the item of plumbing. You'll sometimes see 'lavatory' as well, which is traditionally a posher word, as is loo.

[–]Dizmn(((Barbie))) 3

It's a regional thing, I've heard it in parts of the US as well. It's also more proper than "loo". The BBC likes to avoid using slang in their headlines.

"Toilet" is also an old word for dressing, grooming etc. so it's not wrong to use it for a changing table. I think it was as a euphemism that it originally came to refer specifically to the commode. I remember laughing as a kid when my Mancunian grandmother would announce in the morning that she was going to "do me toilet", but she actually meant it in the old sense of the word, i.e. putting on her make-up.

[–]ZemedelphosSecret Sneeple Shill | Social Justice Road Warrior level 2 0

"Toilet" was an old word for the room where one would clean and make themselves up before going out. It included not only the commode(the piece of furniture which contained a concealed chamber pot, and the precursor to the modern John), but it's also where you kept other things like your period rags, cosmetics, etc., aka your toiletries. It's actually a US thing to use "toilet" as a stand in for indoor latrine, while the British still use it to describe the room where you do your business and clean yourself up.

It was so odd to me the first time I went into a restroom and there wasn't a baby changing station. I never had a baby, but since I can remember, the wal-mart my parents went to always had a Koala station, and when I moved up north and found that very few of them had one, I was perplexed. "How is someone supposed to change their brat without one of those? On the sink counter??"

Glad to see this is being signed into law.
