It's perfect equivalence. If someone breaks into your home to kill you being able to fight back with lethal force is more important to your survival than all the cars and reliable transportation in the world. In the cost-benefit analysis, nothing trumps survival.
There will always be idiots who shoot their family members. There are also parents who let their kids drown in the tub, let them choke to death on hot dogs, back over them with the car, etc. Besides, your statistics can't account for the confidence one has with having them and knowing how to use them, their deterrence, their usefulness in other ways (say, a pit bull about to attack), and so on. Friends of mine have been robbed but people know I have multiple guns and know how to use them. I've never been robbed. It doesn't prove anything but I believe there's an unspoken deterrence if anyone ever tried to scope me out as a potential target for home invasion. There are fewer murders and thefts in states with liberal gun laws. Meanwhile the deadliest place in America (Chicago) has the most restrictive gun laws.
