Michigander, but I think I would enjoy Texas life

Also a Michigander, but living in Texas. You would.

Or if you're outside the US, something like a mini crossbow or taser if either of those are legal, and if not then and thing you can use to defend yourself like a baseball bat.
[–]Lemerney2 3 points4 points5 points  (3 children)
Hard to do if you aren't in america.
[–]vanquish421 1 point2 points3 points  (2 children)
That isn't true. Many developed countries allow you to at least keep guns in your home.
[–]Lemerney2 0 points1 point2 points  (1 child)
Yes but you need a reason that's not self-defense.
[–]vanquish421 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
Once again, for some countries, no that is not the case; self defense is enough. And quite frankly, that's all that should be required.

Statistics show you are more likely to kill a family member (accidentally or on purpose) than to thwart an intruder. And it's not even close.
[–]llIllIIlllIIlIIlllII 16 points17 points18 points  (6 children)
Statistics also show that 30,000 people die in traffic accidents every year in the US, meaning that you're far, far more likely to die if you ride in a car than if you don't.
[–]badwolf1986 comment score below threshold-10 points-9 points-8 points  (4 children)
False equivalence. The benefits of cars far outweigh the gains - that is why we are willing to tolerate a certain number of deaths. We live in a society where people need transportation to and from places that may not be in close proximity.
Your argument is the embodiment of academic dishonesty.
[–]llIllIIlllIIlIIlllII 13 points14 points15 points  (3 children)
It's perfect equivalence. If someone breaks into your home to kill you being able to fight back with lethal force is more important to your survival than all the cars and reliable transportation in the world. In the cost-benefit analysis, nothing trumps survival.
There will always be idiots who shoot their family members. There are also parents who let their kids drown in the tub, let them choke to death on hot dogs, back over them with the car, etc. Besides, your statistics can't account for the confidence one has with having them and knowing how to use them, their deterrence, their usefulness in other ways (say, a pit bull about to attack), and so on. Friends of mine have been robbed but people know I have multiple guns and know how to use them. I've never been robbed. It doesn't prove anything but I believe there's an unspoken deterrence if anyone ever tried to scope me out as a potential target for home invasion. There are fewer murders and thefts in states with liberal gun laws. Meanwhile the deadliest place in America (Chicago) has the most restrictive gun laws.
[–]Individdy 5 points6 points7 points  (1 child)
Also it's useful to use statistics that apply as specifically to oneself as possible. So rather than general firearm statistics as someone above quoted, if one has studied safety well etc. then look at ones for that subgroup. Also an odd thing is that firearm statistics often focus on the cause of death or injury, rather than looking at how they affect chance of death or injury, i.e. they consider it a problem only because it was a firearm that did it, and that having it occur without a firearm isn't relevant.
[–]cogsandspigots 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
The gun control we need:
  1. Treat it like it's loaded unless you have positive confirmation it is not.
  2. Muzzle away from anyone and anything you don't want a hole in.
  3. Finger off the trigger until you're ready to fire.
  4. Squeeze it like you mean it.
[–]CaptainAsshat 0 points1 point2 points  (0 children)
When calculating risk, you have to take into account probability as well as magnitude. Though I suppose your Chicago comment does touch on that.
[–]jaavaaguru -4 points-3 points-2 points  (0 children)
I don't have a car or a gun and don't need either.
