Thanks for sharing this but can you read this

I can't read it and I have 20/20 vision...

I have 20/20 and I can read it tho

I can read it too, but I have 150% zoom as standard. Just Zoomed out to 100% and I can still read it, but it is kinda blurry (I have glasses).

I have 20/15 and 20/13 vision =/ idk eye doctor chick said I have better than 20/20 vision so I am like Superman or something; impressed women of the world?

But can you read this

oh shit I can, 40/20 vision now bois

Why don't you use screen reading software?

Because 99.999999% of websites don't ever take into consideration Section 508 or any accessibility UX into their web development. I have done a ton of this at my last job and probably will during my new job - but it is only mandatory by law for government used products to be accessible, so most people won't bother.

Plus, if you are not blind, listening to a screen reader is so completely confusing and hard to follow when you visually can see things on the screen. And if the above is true and a website doesn't use proper avenues to make their website accessible, it is almost impossible to use.

EDIT: if anyone is interested, there are two major screen readers that people use. JAWS is the professional one (http://www.freedomscientific.com/Products/Blindness/JAWS) but their license is some outrageous amount, like $1,000 / seat (user). The other one is NVDA (http://www.nvaccess.org/) and this one is free.

Also, given that most people do not build websites with accessibility in mind, there is also issues depending upon which browser you use; every browser has an accessibility API that the screen readers use to try to interpret the page you are on, but if you don't bother adding in certain web development standards for accessibility, what IE might return back might be completely different than what Chrome or Firefox tells the screen reader to say (if anything).

I encourage everyone to download NVDA and try it out and realize just how lucky you are to have vision versus trying to use these tools to use a computer (or any electronic device) if you were blind.

but it is only mandatory by law for government used products to be accessible, so most people won't bother.

I once worked for a large software company who supplied products to many government entities. I wasn't a QA person, but I decided to give jaws a shot and found that the product was completely unusable. I tried a few other tools and each one was broken. I looked into the code and sure enough, there was a bug that existed for over 7 years that prevented any accessibility from working at all... I mean, this shit was broke. yet somehow the product had documented that it passed accessibility testing each and every release.

I guess what I am trying to say is, regardless of any well intentioned mandate, it is definitely not enforced. The product I developed for was used by hundreds of different government entities and obviously no one ever bothered to enforce this rule for over 7 years. I fixed the bug with 1 line of code and hopefully it is still accessible today.

Thank you for your reply. I am a web developer and I have various rules of thumb that I always go by in order to make a website as friendly as possible to people who are blind. If the client pays extra then I will go to even further lengths. Having watched your video, and read your thoughts on screen readers, I will put more effort in moving forward.

You're right that it's only mandatory by law for government websites but that appears to be changing. I've read about various corporations getting hit with lawsuits for not properly addressing accessibility UX issues on their website. For example, (Red Roof Inns)[http://pennrecord.com/stories/510641392-blind-woman-sues-red-roof-inns-alleging-inaccessible-website].

I was wondering wouldn't using a dark theme make it easier on the eyes?

I do use a dark theme now.

If you don't mind me asking which one do you use?

It's something that you can have if you have Reddit Gold. I have a yearly gold subscription so I can use it, since it works on mobile. I love it.

Oh yeah the Reddit Gold dark theme is really good. I'm not using it currently as I'm using /r/Carbon as my theme right now/

how does that help you? It seems to make things way to dark.

Using dank memes makes it easier on the eyes

Excellent video, thanks for posting.

Out of curiosity, have you tried any virtual reality devices before? Having a close and magnified screen may make reading or watching shows easier. It's a pretty exciting time for VR and the possibilities it brings.

How did the surgery go for your daughter? Hopefully the GoFundMe campaign was a success?

Yeah, eveyrthing was fine and is fine now. The issue was that I wasn't working and my boyfriend had to miss a ton of work, and since I was on maternity leave he didn't qualify for sick leave. So, he took a ton of unpaid days. That's why I needed to raise money - so we could pay rent. But it was only one month that was hard. Now I'm working full-time so everything is fine.

That's awesome, glad it worked out.

Thanks. according to this thread I'm a selfish and terrible parent who's in denial about how terrible my life must be.

[–]Fartbox_Virtuoso [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Ignore the haters, they need to hate something. If you're cool with how life is, screw everybody who doesn't want to be happy as well.

[–]CHECK_MY_SUBMISSIONS 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I am legally blind as well, and have a similar situation with needing to be very close to the screen to read it. The solution I settled on was having an arm that my monitor can mount on (something like this). This lets me pull it closer to me so I don't have to hunch over my desk. The only drawback I can see is that you need to be good at touch-typing since I leave my keyboard in the usual spot.

I found your video very inspiring! Thanks for showing us.

Just think in 100 years that's exactly what someone else will say on Virtual Reddality™ about our savage techniques.

I had to giggle when I heard her say that. I'm an OR nurse and one of our specialties is eyes. I'm still relatively new, but in a matter of 20ish, or even less years, eye surgeries have change drastically.

So while I'm watching the surgery, I can watch exactly what the surgeon is doing while inside the eye. When they do a membrane peel, while in the eye, I can see the tiniest little membrane being removed. It's pretty cool stuff, but it's even better to realize how much of a change all this has gone through!

Yeah. It took 20 minutes, basically, and my daughter felt no pain. It's incredible.

She (and I hope /u/grumpyfinn reads this), is amazing. Years ago (in the early 2000's) I had the honour of working with a local non-profit that works with the blind (in Canada, it's the CNIB). They had a summer camp for blind or mostly blind kids, between the ages of 15 to 19. It was a 2-week summer camp where one week was spent doing outdoor things, and 1 week was spend in a computer lab where they made a website (that's where I helped, in the computer lab).

It was truly inspirational to watch and learn from these kids. And /u/grumpyfinn, I can say I met quite a few people with your condition, or conditions very similar. Some people used terrible screen readers (they used a program called Jaws), and some used screen magnifiers, and others would look very closely like you do. All of them were very capable and got their tasks done.

However there was one very memorable thing I watched. There was one girl who had no sight, so she used Jaws and headphones. It's a terrible computer experience, because most websites are really shitty at including accessible markers and tags (missing alt tags for photos were a big one that Jaws would stumble over). So, one girl got lost on her page and was starting to get very frustrated. Her neighbour helped her out. So, they stretched the headphones over both heads, and they worked together to solve the problem.

It was literally "the blind leading the blind". I have never used that saying in a negative way since, and I share my story to anyone that uses it. It's left an indelible impression on me.

Specifically, to /u/grumpyfinn ... thank you for answering questions on this thread and other threads. There's a lot (oh boy, there's a lot) of ignorance and intolerance tossed your way. Thank you for having the grace and patience to answer questions, and having the courage to show people how truly capable you are.

Hugs.

I wonder if Google Glass or VR glasses would be close enough to your focal point/eyes to work. I imagine beyond that they could build an app to shrink a wide angle view to your right eye to give you an artificial full field of vision.

Vr wasn't all that helpful. I got to try Valves VR system last Friday and the picture kept blurring due to my eye movement.
There's also a video on my channel of me using the Samsung Gear.

I wonder if we did eye tracking, we could stabilize it for you. Hmm.

Didn't think about the eye movement. Perhaps on top of the VR system they could add an eye-tracking function to compensate. My eyes are crap, too. Best of luck t you.

/u/GrumpyFinn Sorry if this has been asked before, but why haven't you learn't to touch type? Also, seems like you'd really benefit from a monitor mounted on a swingarm so you don't have to slouch forward and crane your neck. Have you looked into any solutions or are you fine with your current method?

"Licia".. I found your video incredible and fascinating. You seem like such an intelligent and joyous person!! I'm awed at your strength. And a giant "fuck you" to all those saying disabled people shouldn't reproduce. You are evident as to what a full and happy life you have. My wife and I have a developmentally disabled son. People that don't understand look at that and feel sorry for us. We wouldn't have it any other way. And he too lives an extremely full and enjoyable life.
I love your personality and your love of hockey too!!! Awesome!! I've subscribed to your channel. PS: Stupid NHL and gamecenter eh?!!

[–]Dickless_Bigfoot 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's AN, you fucking troglodyte.

She seems like a great person - and I am sure this will be taken the wrong way, but would it be smart to have a kid knowing there's like a 90% certainty she'll have the same condition, as your family before you had it? I wouldn't want to do that to my child.

Being blind isnt a death sentence. People can enjoy life blind and making the world have less barriers is what the rest of us can do to help.

Sure, but creating new creatures knowing they'll have a guaranteed (relatively) reduced quality of life regardless of what society can do to accommodate them is cruel and selfish. We don't need to punish anyone for this, but this kind of thoughtless behavior must be actively discouraged.

But why do that someone if you have the choice to adopt? That's a pretty selfish decision in this situation.

adoption is extremely difficult, especially if you're a disabled person. it'd take years and years for them to be able to adopt a child, and frankly it's unlikely that most agencies would even give them a child in the first place. adoption is not an easy path in America.

Adoption isn't for everyone, for many different reasons.

Yup so let's just give birth to a disabled child instead.

You don't get to know the decisions that people make and what informs them. Get over yourself.

I already know, she pretty much showed her opinions. If her daughter is blind, eh, she's had a good life so far. Wtf. Her daughter will be so limited in life because of this. Would you give birth knowing your child's eyeballs will be removed? Because that is what's happening here.

That would be a wise choice. but , i dont know if our medical technology can fix that condition now.

I think that's a decision someone has to make personally. If she can be happy then her children can be happy. I'm sure she understands better than anyone the things her children will have to deal with.

Definitively, she should have one. I'm willing to help out here if there is something I can do, just PM me :) Perhaps something I can do since I'm Norwegian and a bit closer to Finland then perhaps many other redditors ? /u/GrumpyFinn just wondering, have you ever tried VR glasses ? Like Oculus Rift ? the screen is perhaps at the correct distance to your eyes so it would easier surf and do other stuff online ? Would be awesome if something like this could help.

Hej! ;)
I have tried the Samsung Gear and also the thing that Valve has. Both were difficult. The Valve one kept blurring because my eye movement wouldn't stop. The Gear just had too much small text.
I'm always open to try new stuff, though. I would've liked more time with the Valve set but I was at an event for women in the industry and didn't want to hog it too much.

My boyfriend has suggested an LED keyboard for a while and I'd love one, I just haven't had the money. It's been on my list for a while, though. I've thought about asking my boss to get one for my work computer, it just has to have the Finnish letters.

I hope she has a really good screen, I dont know much but I bet a higher resolution screen would help when you are that close....

Actually, the lower the better,. Bigger screens just means more neck-wrenching. Having a small screen is much, much more comfortable.

My bad I was actually talking resolution. I agree smaller screen for her is better. Also dimming or making color changes might help too. If I had money I would buy this for her.

[–]The_Withheld_Name 7ポイント8ポイント  (2子コメント)

I do have to question the judgement of someone who knowingly reproduces a detrimental genetic trait, as lovely a person as she seems. Sarah Silverman has said she wouldn't want her children to have depression, to say nothing of blindness; that's reasonable.

If you read the thread there's a pretty serious case of Stockholm Syndrome going on... Then again, most people don't have the emotional stability to make peace with the fact that they're not just different, they're objectively worse, so you get the denial here. I just feel sorry for the kid TBH.

You feel bad for the baby with 2020 vision who has two parents who love her and work hard for her?

Sitting that close to the screens gonna be bad for your eyes..

Not to make it seem trivial, but would it not be way easier and efficient just to use a text-to-speech tool?

I was recently diagnosed with something called Lebers hereditary optic neuropathy. My left eye currently has no central vision and very little peripheral vision. Soon my right eye will begin to deteriorate as well. At some point soon I will be almost completely blind. This has all been extremely scary for me and my wife. This video is very encouraging for what I will still be able to do in the future. Thank you so much for sharing. Also any advice about going blind at 27 years old would be appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope there's some kind of treatment that makes you better. Take care brother.

There's a speed reading technique I think would be especially helpful for someone with your condition. You read a single word at a time and the words flash in the same spot quickly - it's a crappy explanation so just checkout the site below!

http://spritzinc.com/

As someone who has a similar condition I would recommend trying out the built in magnifier that is included with windows. It takes a little while to get used to seeing 10% of the page at a time but it will save your neck and back in the long run.

[–]Zondax 7

People with a disorder like this and know it has been in their family for a few generations, why do they keep on reproducing? do they expect their child not to get the same disorder? i dont really get it. maybe this is a selfish question idk

The issue comes down to quality of life. We've always had a high one. Nobody suffers. I don't rely on anyone to survive. I'm pretty tough and the whole reason I make these videos is to put ideas like yours to rest.

This woman has a family, browses reddit, enjoys life, makes videos, and is even replying in this thread. Why the hell shouldn't she exist? Because she can't see like you can?

[–]Zondax 5

I am not saying she shouldnt live. she is in the 1% of people with this disability who is living a "normal" life. this is all because she has been fortunate in her life to have people support her. this is 99% of the time not the case for others.

You have it, your father has it, your grandma has it, your great grand-father had it, it's run in your family for 500 fucking years, and now your kid has it too. How about you guys stop propagating your clearly broken, inferior genes? Do you feel no guilt whatsoever about creating a life that's going to go through hardship simply because you're so selfish that you feel the need to breed? Especially now, when your children are guarantueed to suffer (and possibly even die) due to the inevitable, catastrophic effects of climate change? Shit's going to be difficult for normal people, how the fuck do you expect a mostly blind person to fare? If you want kids, adopt one. Don't make another broken one.

She should really try to get used to a screen reader. Once you completely ditch the need to read, it will be a faster way to browse the internet.
