I've never cared for any of the Fallouts or Elder Scrolls mainly because the gameplay is always really stiff, the games are always loaded with bugs, and it seems like AI is always incredibly stupid. I own FO3 and New Vegas and couldn't get into either. I tried Morrowind when I was a kid and don't remember liking it too much. Yet all my friends swear Skyrim is the GOAT, and with the new remastered edition or whatever this one is called, it looks pretty damn promising. Is this going to be just another incredibly stiff and disappointing Betheseda game, or is this one truly the stand out game that is worth my time?

I'm thinking of playing it on PC btw.

If you play it with mods then definitely.

There's some huge fan patches out there that fix a ton of bugs and lots of different mods to change the combat.

I think there's even a dark souls combat mod IIRC.

It's not that great. Bethesda games can become pretty great with extensive modding, but as a base package they're just decent at best. You likely wont find much enjoyment in it if you didn't like other bethesda games.

If you couldn't get into the other Elder Scrolls games or action Fallouts, I don't think Skyrim would sway you differently. It can be fun to explore but you would still have to deal with the issues that you already don't like.

Open world jank isn't appealing anymore now that we have a wider array of games that are similarly large scale and play far, far better.

Bethesda's been spinning their wheels and Skyrim was the beginning of it. It's super hard to go back to now as a result.

If you don't like Bethesda games, you won't like it. I personally think Skyrim is a wonderful game that has a lot of issues. It's not very deep, it looks dated in many ways, and it's really buggy/janky like every other BGS game, but I just love exploring the world and trying to build my own story within the (admittedly limited) framework they give you. It's my favorite game to just sit down with and wander to see what I can find. I think I'm more forgiving of its faults than many are, though.

Plus, the soundtrack always gets me <3 It might just be nostalgia because of the place in my life I was at the first time I played the game and heard the music, but wandering though the woods with certain tracks playing can make my chest tight they're so good.

For me playing Skyrim is worth it only when it's heavily modded and even then I get bored after 10-20 hours. Sometimes I think the modding itself is more fun then playing the game lol.

If you don't like Bethesda games, then the amount of effort you will need to put into getting all the mods just to make the game less crappy-ish probably won't be worth your time.

It's very pretty and has great atmosphere, though, especially with mods, so if you want a game to just explore in, it can be pretty good for that.

What I've found over the years is that your mood is the most important factor here. Bethesda games are Bethesda game. No more no less. I loved Oblivion and Fallout 3 to pieces. Tried Skyrim and Fallout 4 this year and stopped playing after an hour. No interest whatsoever. If you even somewhat doubt you would have fun with it, don't even try. It's just a waste of time.

The main reason was the setting. I found Skyrim too boring in this regard. Oblivion had a much better setting, plus you got to go the Planes of Oblivion.

There's not a lot of harm in trying it out, but I don't think you will like it if Morrowind did little for you.

I really enjoy it for what it is, and have put 100's of hours into it. But there are some huge problems with the game like you've mentioned.
I haven't had really any issues with bugs on PC, I think the gameplay is okay, and the AI is definitely bad. There might be some mods to fix some of those things, but over all if it isn't your type of game, you probably won't like it.

Maybe ask your friends if you can play one of their games for a bit?

Haha. It was my first Bethesda game. I had no idea what to expect... I played for ages, trying to find more to the game, to let the game surprise me, but, nope, never happened.

No consequences, depth, nothing. You can do everything! And it is all meaningless.

Finished all the big quests and all that it does is change the dialogue of the guards. Makes the world feel so lifeless.

But my roommate at the time played through it like, 4 times with a bunch of different characters. Boggled my mind, I couldn't understand why.

But now I understand it is just how Bethesda games go. So I just stay far far away.

You're playing Witcher 3 right now, Skyrim in comparison is amateurish.

Terrible storytelling. Only thing that stuck with me is Fus Roh Dah.
For the most part the characters are uninteresting.
Bland world littered with fetch quests.
And the other content is just a slight veneer over that.

Witcher 3's combat often is described as not great next to Bloodborne.
Skyrim's combat has worse than combat in Animal Crossing. In that it'd be a better game without any.

Exploring the world is fun, but then you end up going through similarly designed dungeons over and over again. And combat is fucking boring.

I'd recommend the Souls series or Dragon's Dogma instead.

At the time it was Demon's souls that ruined Skyrim for me. I was quite hyped about it but once I saw the combat in Demon's I just could not accept the sluggish combat in Skyrim anymore. If you have enjoyed any souls games before, don't even try Skyrim I would say.

It's a point on Bethesda's downward trajectory from Oblivion to Fallout 4.

It's sandboxy as hell, though. If you have mods and don't take things too seriously it's possible to have fun.

Theoretically. For me, it was the first TES game I didn't even try to finish. I guess that's that.

Definitely worth trying though, people love it

Although please note that if you play the new remastered edition, most mods won't work at all.

What's funny about Gaf advice on some games is our opinions are totally different than what the outsiders think.

Skyrim to many is a GOAT while to others its not. You have to try it for yourself, this isn't the right place to ask.

I did notice that on GAF, Bethesda made RPGs get one hell of a bad rap. I still think the complaints people have are valid though. Personally, I never minded the occasional jank of Skyrim. One of my favorite games of all time, easily.

I wouldn't recommend it, no. If you weren't even able to enjoy New Vegas. Ofcourse there are a lot of differences between Skyrim and Fallout series, setting being a big one. The problems you encountered are found in all of them.

I'm sure there are games that you have personal interest in and that you would most definitely enjoy. Stick to those for now, Skyrim isn't that hot.

I think it mostly comes from them not being good RPG:s, they can be fun sandboxes for people who enjoy that kind of stuff. Shooting and looting. Fallout 3/4 for example are much better as open world shooters than RPG:s. Also Bethesda has somewhat tarnished part of Fallout's legacy. They took it so hard in another direction from what the originals were praised for.

I liked skyrim a lot. Not the greatest game by any means, and not the deepest in terms of combat, but still a pretty fun role playing game.

I guess if you don't like Bethesda games, then you probably won't like Skyrim... cause it is a Bethesda game after all. Seems like a weirdly obvious thing that has been pointed out over and over though.
