Trump and his kind simply know that, when they argue a certain way, they get the response they want. It doesn't mean they know why it works.

We can observe that Trump's "apology" seeks to change the conversation from "I admitted to sexual assault" to "I spoke rudely about women."

But the trick here is not simply to switch your position, but specifically to defend your new position with a crap argument.

He opens his defense by saying he never said he was perfect and that he never claimed to be someone he's not. Both are literally false.
