Twitter did not go easy on the England skipper.
Wayne Rooney was deployed in a deeper role by new England boss Gareth Southgate against Malta this evening.

However, the out-of-form Manchester United captain failed to make a significant impact alongside Jordan Henderson and Dele Alli.

It wasn’t a terrible performance by Rooney - although he was mocked on social media during the first half after a Malta player embarrassed him with a neat little nutmeg
