Mosin is a rifle.

The Russians did not have enough weapons for all soldiers so they told those who were unarmed that if they wanted a weapon they needed to take it from a dead comrade.

This is a myth blown out of proportion. It only happened sometimes during the battle of stalingrad.

[–]80Eight 27ポイント28ポイント  (1子コメント)

It was very common in the beginning of WW1. They had a buddy system, 2 soldiers to a gun.

Unless there are some psychic comrades out there, I doubt they would wear a Soviet cap in WW1.

In World War II the Soviets had more men than guns. So maybe every other man, or maybe even every few men, had a weapon (the mosin nagant was a common soviet rifle) and the rest all carried ammo so that way when the guy with the weapon died someone else would pick it up.

Another fun fact is that the Russians actually had the most guns. But since their army was so large they still didn't have enough.

Something of a myth really, while the Soviets did have supply problems at the start of the war, they didn't send unarmed men on the attack.

Dan Carlin is pretty reliable.

What are your sources? Cause I'm just going to generically site Hardcore History: Blueprint For Armageddon and hope that Dan isn't making a fool of me.

[–]BreaksFull 6ポイント7ポイント  (1子コメント)

Dan is pretty decent but like he often says, he's not a historian and his eastern front episode was iffy in some places. There's an /r/askhistorians thread on the topic here that covers the topic, with the general idea being that while there were instances of Soviet soldiers forced into battle underequipped, it was more because of the chaotic nature of the early German invasions that threw supply lines into disarray and large groups of soldiers sometimes found themselves surrounded and cut off from supplies. The Soviets were pretty callous toward human life often, but they weren't so stupid as to literally throw unarmed men into gunfire as a standard doctrine.

Also his BPFA series is about WWI, not the Eastern Front.

Well From my research into it the policy wasn't to send men into battle unarmed. There may have been times where impromptu charges led to unarmed men charging but it wasn't going to be a thought out strategy.

So basically No one planned it but in the heat of the moment if an opportunity to charge comes up go for it comrade.

[–]GIANT_BLEEDING_ANUS 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

this, sending unarmed men into battle is bad military strategy, to say the least.

Protip- Dan Carlin exaggerates details and leaves out others to better fit his narrative. He's generally okay, but he's not an academic source.

[–]NoxiousDogCloud 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Dan Carlin isn't actually that reliable. He's not a historian, he's an entertainer. He has a habit of exaggerating and taking single source comments as fact.

He's not totally wrong, but he's not what any historian would consider reliable. He's entertaining. Hell, I like him, and he's a great intro to stuff, but relying on him as a si file source is going to be dubious at best.

Also, the WW2 Eastern Front episode is Ghosts of the Ost Front. Blueprint is WW1.
