A very well groomed Chow, you can see the purple tongue a bit.

And for anyone unfamiliar with chows...they are very territorial and protective of their family. Unless they have been properly socialized from a very young age, they can become aggressive towards strangers, so never approach one without the permission of its owner first, and do not associate its temperament with its looks.

They all have double coats, but some are much more thicker than others. The Chow i had as a kid had really thick fur, and had to be groomed constantly or else it would get all matted.

I have a rough haired black chow - black lab mix. I need to find a name for the "breed" because it is by far the best dog I've ever owned. Wants to defend the house and is extremely loyal like a chow, loves to exercise, swim and play ball like a lab. And he's handsome as heck. Looks similar to your dog. I'll post a pic in a moment

    There is a difference between reputable breeders and bad breeders/backyard breeders/puppy mills. Reputable breeders will health test and temperament test their dogs as well as earn titles for them to prove they are worth breeding, that way instead of "well my mutt is cute and he's never been sick and he would make cute puppies" you have "well my German shepherd has a pedigree going back 6 years so i know of any potential health issues or temperament issues those dogs had, and my dog has been ofa certified and has excellent hips, elbows, joints, and eyes, he has earned titles for obedience, schutzhund and agility-he meets breed standard so i will breed him to another dog who meets the same standards so we can improve the breed." Can you see the difference? if you go to a breeder that doesn't do these things, you might as well go to a shelter and not support bad breeding because you have almost the same chances of health and behavior problems because the puppy's history is unknown and it's parents haven't been health tested. "papers", a "health certificate" or a "health guarantee" are NOT the same thing as health testing.     I'm aware there's a difference.

    I'm saying that if you just want to get a dog as a companion or family pet, there is zero reason to ever buy a purebred. Mutts are generally healthier and have more even temperaments and I'd even say it's morally wrong to buy from a breeder when there are so many dogs having to live out their lives in little kennels in shelters throughout the country.

    If you need a dog to do a specific kind of work, to go do agility or obedience challenges, to do conformation (but fuck conformation standards and all of the horrible things they've done to dogs over the years), etc... yeah, absolutely go get a purebred, because that's where purebreds have a clear advantage.

    For everything else... man, adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue society.

    I think people should adopt rather than get a puppy from a breeder if they just want a pet, but some people still want the predictability and reliability of a purebred dog. When you get a dog from a shelter you really don't know what you're getting most of the time. For pet homes that usually doesn't matter but some people will still choose to go to a breeder; so the best thing to do is to educate on the differences and how to find a reputable breeder. Also; conformation standards are made by the breed club; so they aren't all horrible. I think the best thing to do is require breed clubs to fix obviously dangerous standards before accepting them and not allow dogs with common congenital defects of the breed to enter a show ring in the first place.

    But that would rule out bulldogs, pugs, bull terriers, and a lot of other deformed dogs that are now bred for what are seen as "breed standards."

    Its very common for dogs of all breeds to have digestion issues/allergies. I had a German Shepard with colitis, and she was also allergic to duck and beef. Once we found the right food, it was pretty smooth sailing.

    We bred chows and I disagree. Chows, by nature, are aloof dogs and don't suffer fools.
    I don't think it is an owner issue like pits. Chows owners want mean dogs? Despite heavy socialization and growing up with a lots of kids many of our dogs had the typical chow demeanor. We bred our friendliest, most easy going, least-chow-like dogs but often got the independent, cat-like chow.

    Chow chows were originally bred in China to be war dogs, so they definitely have aggressive tendencies if they aren't trained properly. Meanest dog I know is a chow that is also a rescue, and even though he's come a long way he's still a very aggressive dog.
