Don't know why but the broken statue/staircase banister piece/whatever resting between his legs make it look even more silly. It's almost like he just got done knocking something off with his mace, and now he's daring the owner to stop him from breaking more shit in his mansion.

It sounds horrible and I feel sick for saying it, but I really wish it was a white guy. Maybe if I was American I would be ok with it but Europe and the Commonwealth have such a stronger tie to the conflict that I really think the statue or at least the cover art should have been pretty much anyone but an American. It's not even really that it's a black guy, it's that he's an American. Yeah yeah I get the whole target audience argument but I just really think it could have been a European soldier, a Brit, a Frenchman, a German, a Turk, an Arab rebel! I don't know. I'm not even European myself but I really think they deserved to be either the cover, or the statue. Maybe not both as I for sure don't want to exclude the important contribution the Hellfighters made but the Americans are already extremely over represented as it is. I guess I should be happy he is wearing Commonwealth equipment for some reason.

We live in an age where white men are always supposed to take a back seat, even on our own history. And we're supposed to like it too. Don't feel guilty.

I have no problem with playing as a black soldier. But mascot of the game? Wtf is that. Can you imagine the outcry there'd be if a white mascot was made for a war where millions of Africans died? It would not happen.

That is the most likely after American due to his equipment, based mainly on the fact that the devs tweeted that the cover art soldier wasn't American and that he is wearing British equipment. But as I said in another reply, I really don't see how he could be. There are no story lines following Black British troops or African Colonial troops. There ARE story lines following the Harlem hellighters who were outfitted at certain times in the war with equipment from Britain, mainly French equipment but they have been depicted with British gear before. The Harlem hellfighter in the single player trailer is wearing a French helmet but British webbing.

German pistol, British webbing, one American puttee. Harlem hellfighters were issued with mismatched Allied uniforms at times.

And America gave supplies to the Allied nations before entering the war. Just because he has a combination of equipment doesn't mean he is a hellfighter.

He has a combination of equipment, he's of African descent, there is a Harlem Hellfighter based story line, in the single player footage there is an African American soldier wearing the exact same combo of uniform.

He doesn't have any markings of a hellfighter, but the statue does come with a British lifeguards cavalry patch, so there's that (not that that's for sure proof). Also when in the video do you see an African American with this exact uniform combo? I never say anything like that. the first guy you see clearly has a french helmet.

The life guards did not allow non white troops at this point in history. However I didn't know that. It is heavily implied the man in the single player trailer is the man doing the voice over who has an American accent. The Harlem Hellfighters fought mainly wearing French army helmets as they were under French command for the majority of the war as the US higher ups didn't want them mixing with their white troops for 'morale reasons' so the French (who treated people of African descent much better at this time) took command of the Hellfighters.

and many American divisions were equipped with French Adrian helmets as well, not just the Hellfighters. The 1917 Brodie Helmets made in America were not prevalent enough to equip all the American divisions in 1917

Yep, which is why in my opinion this probably not a hellfighter, but just some random British colonial troop. I did think at first that it was a hellfighter though because of the pre order incentive and to be completely honest I'm almost certain that he was until people complained that America had too much representation. I'm sure DICE thought that US and British gear looked similar enough so they changed it at the last minute.

We can also play as soldiers from India yet there isn't a story line for them either. Maybe this guy is a side character who helps the hellfighters along the way? Maybe he's supposed to be a random soldier with no purpose other than to make the game stand out from the rest?

I don't know where you get that it's an American soldier. The figure happens to look like Eddie Murphy, but doesn't mean he is Eddie Murphy or a Black American soldier. All the Black soldiers from America were integrated with the French army, not the Commonwealth. So either this is a weird equipment mismatch, or he isn't an American. In fact, it's hard to say which country he fights for, as the British did not use very many Colonial troops in the Western Front (assuming this is the guy from all the posters and stuff).

Yeah I do get what you mean, in fact a while ago the devs tweeted that the cover art wasn't of an American. But I fail to see who else it could possibly be. Yes it could be African colonial troops, and that would be awesome but there is no single player story line following them. There IS a story line following the Harlem troops. So far all the allied troops in the game have been wearing the same webbing and equipment. This is easily noticed by the red "T" that can be seen on all the characters shoulders. I think the Italians might be different but we haven't seen a lot of them yet. Battlefield 1 is already full of uniform inaccuracies such as Allied troops seen wearing steel helmets at Gallipoli and German troops wearing pickelhelm well into 1918. It wouldn't be a stretch to say this is an American soldier with inaccurately portrayed equipment.

Yea, DICE hasn't been very good with matching the equipment with the nation in the media they've been putting out. This figure is a good example as he is wearing a Commonwealth uniform with a German pistol. I also feel where you're coming from in regards to how the Americans seem over advertised. However, the main audience is a bunch of Americans and what better way to sell a game than by making Americans super-patriotic about our one-year involvement.
