That really sucks for Amplitude. Endless Legend isn't a perfect 4X game, but its had some cool mechanics and a really interesting game world.

It's a shame that the game couldn't be translated in their lanuage, but Amplitude was more than justified in removing the mod since it linked to a pirated version of the game.

Hopefully, Steam or someone can rectify it, or maybe have a disclaimer with the current review score standing.

I mean what do these people expect? That the Devs and Steam would totally be okay with the hoster of the translation mod, instead of updating it, giving out a link to a place where people can download a pirated copy of an older version of the game that works with it? Of course not and they were even nice enough to give the guy a heads up and warn him.

Just fix the damn mod so that it will work with the current version of the game and everyone would be happy again.

B-b-but China! Think of all the potential consumers who can't download a free pirated game with 0 effort anymore!

I was wondering about that, was just looking at it today trying to reach Endless Space 2 and I thought it looked odd that the recent reviews were mixed.

What's worse is that Endless Legend is getting a new DLC in a week. So people looking at the game in a week will think the game sucks... annoying.

I might go buy all the DLC now just to support them. I loved the base game, just never got around to playing the DLC.

It's unfortunate that people can tank reviews for something like this, but I guess there isn't a good way to combat it short of valve actually curating reviews, which would lead to other issues such as people claiming they're removing legitimate reviews.

They could allow users to select groups of reviews (for example localized reviews, or how did American players feel about the game vs German?)

They could also show more data, like graphs, as to show trends.

Or I assume the game is still doing well review wise outside China and this should be fairly easy to illustrate with the right tools. Perhaps they could also allow the developer to pick one stat they want to highlight as long as it is clear that's what's happening.

But I guess a problem here is that the Chinese are using English versions and then modding it into Chinese.

Do what IMDB does, allow people to view reviews separated by age bracket, location, gender, etc.

Useful for example if you want to see if a film is actually mediocre or there was a group that was forced to watch it (significant others, parents, etc) that hated it.

Considering just how many problems Steam reviews have had since the feature was released, it's probably a better idea for Valve to just remove the whole thing entirely.

If someone wanted to see reviews or a bunch of opinions for a game then there's a ton of avenues to do so outside of Steam. And those reviews are less likely to be a single line of text from someone attempting to be funny.

They're pretty entitled. Steam opening up to the Chinese market is a mistake since most of them pirate all their games anyway. They were freaking out not too long ago because No Man's Sky didn't have Mandarin language support. Yeah, a small studio with no more than 12 developers is going to roll out support for Mandarin...that's definitely going to happen.

this wouldn't be an issue if steam had a way to download an older version of a game
people are probably angry that the game they bought no longer works

It's not a gameplay mod but an unofficial language patch for Chinese. I think best scenario is the dev work with the mod author to bring the translations into official release versions

[–]Gruntlock [スコア非表示]  (8子コメント)

I'm sure the devs would love to work with the douche that told people to steal their game.

[–]delguapo [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

In the steam community discussion here, one of the devs says:

"What happened here is very unfortunate, because we've tried reaching out and working with the original author of the mod for an actual support of the mod in an official capacity, with a view to support the game in Chinese altogether. We want to make the game available in Chinese, and are ready to work with the mod's author for their work to be recognized.

Unfortunately, despite several attempts at reaching out, including a message that was translated into Chinese to make sure to avoid any miscommunication, we've never heard back from the author of the mod.

And still, the negative reviews pour in, regretting the lack of support for Chinese, or that the mod doesn't work anymore.

It's a frustrating situation for everyone."

the mod author to bring the translations into official release versions

That's problematic for other reasons, for instance, the language patch may be serviceable but shite.

Folding it into the official release and then having it as a language provided, when its being done poorly gives an indicator that the developers are lazy or don't give a shit about that region or whatever else someone comes up with.

Not supporting it at all due to financial reasons is far more justified.

[–]piderman [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

They tried but apparently didn't manage to open up communications.

[–]Ilitarist [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

It's not easy.

There's an official Russian translation. Believe me, I know, because the game switches to Russian each time I reload Steam. And it's serviceable. But it's bad. It isn't as consistent, and it uses some weird terms.

So I'm playing English one. If I didn't know English I would petition for a better Russian translation and I'd be justified cause it says on a Steam page there's Russian translation. If they support Chinese but don't do it properly they're risking justified refunds.

[–]ThunderKnight [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Exactly. Work with them and bring it to Chinese players.

I wonder what the best solution for sites like Steam are to combat groups of users from tanking review scores - like with this, Super Hot's Oculus exclusivity or Diretide for Dota 2.

Must be horrible for smaller devs that often live of their reputation.

this might be the most irrelevant news i've ever seen. i feel like this is just going to be a thread of people wanting to push some thinly veiled agenda against china. we shall see.

[–]soldierswitheggs [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

I don't see anyone pushing an agenda like that. This type of disproportionate, irrational outrage isn't exclusive to China, or even to video gamers. I'm not sure why your assumption would be that the thread was going to head in that direction. I haven't seen almost any racism in /r/Games.

I also don't think the news is irrelevant. This subreddit has news about gamers being outraged about this or that all the time. Yes, this time the outrage is coming from China, but it's affecting the game's reviews everywhere. Why shouldn't it be talked about in /r/Games?
