“And the under-23s league is crap. If you’re not in the first team by 20, you’re not going to make the first team, so why have it 23? You’re just stagnating people. Twenty-one was bad enough. I’d really throw all money at the under-19 league, go alongside Europe. The Premier League have their own way of making money, which ultimately is what it’s all about in my opinion.” About recruitment rather than development? “Yes.”
- Nicky Butt on Youth Development in England.
In last 10 years more than 30+ youth product have left Man Utd either on loan or on permanent basis in search of playing time. Most of them have left to championship, League one and two clubs. Drinkwater, Simpson, Cleverly, Amos, Zieler, Giuseppe Rossi, James, Shawcross, Mcshane, Bardsley and exception like Pique and Pogba left for bigger clubs.
The combined highest market value of player who have left is more than 200M+(acc. Transfermarkt Market Value).
Sometimes to championship team might work for our player but the only player who had decent loan spell and playing for 1st team is Jesse Lingard.
Jesse Lingard had really great debut, scored 4 goals on his debut and the he only managed to score only 2 goals in rest of the 12 games.
Crewe Alexandra rejected to keep Nick Powell on loan because they had their own player to deveop and they didn't really wanted to develop the player they had sold. Powell had to play for for u21s and never got chances in 1st team. He had really unsuccessful loan spell, Leicester send him back from loan because of his attitude in Training. He was one of the best English young player but never got chance to develop properly. Late he was released and was left for free.
Rossi, he was on loan at New Castle but heard that NCFC's players used to pass the ball to him less because he was from Man Utd and was there to take their place. Macheda, Keane twins all had to leave in search of game time and development.
Will Keane rarely played for Preston NE.
Though Ben Pearson got enough game time and had successful loan spell at Barnsley he had to leave the club in search of Game Time. He left for Championship Club Preston.
Ashley Fletcher had successful season at Barnsley too. Had helped Barnsley to promote. But he was 1st team material and rejected to play for u21/3.
James Wilson is playing for Derby's u23 where as we don't really have a single striker in our u23s. He is not getting as much time as he was expected to.
If we had our own Man Utd B/C clubs then James Wilson, Rossi, Keane twins, Morrison, Pettruci, Drinkwater, Simpson, McNair would have never left Man Utd that early. I know they are not very good but would have been our team player. They would have got a chance to show their worth for the club's B/C team.
CbJ, Pereira, Januzaj, Wilson would have developed under club's staff and would not have to face the rejection faced by Blackett at Celtic, Januzaj faced at Dortmund(It was really bad for them, shitty).
Sam Johnstones would have regularly played for our B team.
U23 is not competitive. It is a shit league, which is not about development but it is all about playing time for random players and just a formality.
Varela on his season long loan as Castilla
"That year [with Real Madrid B team] was a learning experience and gave me confidence," Varela explained.
"I have to be grateful for the support I got. I wish him [Zidane] the best in charge at Real.
"Castilla is something different, playing in the Segunda Division or Segunda B, and you have a lot of pressure. They treat you like you are a first-team player and that's impressive.
"Here in Manchester the reserves are totally different. The league in which they play is not very good, and more about development. It is very good for the kids who are growing up, but when you reach a certain age it is not so much use to you."
Castilla helped to develop him really further but when he came back to Man Utd, u21 wasn't really helping him. When he made his first team debut, he was impressive but raw and rusty.
Right now players like Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley, Harrop and even Demi Mitchell are too good for u23. Tuanzebe is a first team material and so are Poole and Riley. They would have really played competitive game they needed to develop their game technically as well as mentally if we had our own B/C team.
In that way, u17s and u19s might help player's development. Gomes, Chong, Burkat, DJ, Gribbin, RoShaun would have played for u19s but not for u23.
Gomes is too good but he would have played for u17s too.
Last year we signed Josh Doughty from Real Salt Lake Academy.
He is yet to make appearance this season. I haven't heard a single word about his this season. Now he is 19 and cannot play for u18s and he is not ready for u23s yet.
Club's B/C team is not just about developing best players but it is about developing capable players. Marc Barta, Pedro played for Barca B and Messi had played for both C and B before making his debut for senior team.
If they are not good enough for first team then we can sell them in good amount just the way Bayern sold Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.
Some time I think players like Gomes, RoShaun and Gribbin are ready for further challenge and would have made their appearance to our B/C team if they ever existed. Just like the way Matthew Knox, Ethan Ampadu and Ryan Sessegnon(all of them are 16 y/o) are playing in lower league teams.
It is not asking for experiment but it is necessary for the development of youth and home grown player.
What do you think!?
