It was a cop out ending. The alternate ending (better one) is him surviving.

Really a bastardization of the real movie. But thats what you get when you "hollywood up" many novels.

The movie was substantially dumbed down from the novel because they felt it would appeal to a broader audience. They were probably right though; generic zombie bad guys were extremely popular at the time. The ending to the movie was awful and almost seems like it was improvised at the end of production.
