He seems unfamiliar with Trump’s record.
During the Vice Presidential debate on Tuesday, Democratic nominee Tim Kaine hit Mike Pence for Trump’s comments on nuclear weapons, in which he said that more countries should have nuclear weapons.
Mike Pence denied the claim, saying “he never said that.” Trump did.
Trump has said multiple times that it wouldn’t “be a bad thing for us” if other countries, including Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia, had nuclear weapons. In a CNN town hall on March 29, Trump responded to questioning by moderator Anderson Cooper about Japan’s non-nuclear stance by saying that “at some point we have to say, you know what, we’re better off if Japan protects itself against this maniac in North Korea.”
Despite being given numerous opportunities by Cooper to back off, Trump demurred.
“At some point we have to say, you know what, we’re better off,” Trump said.
Nor was that the only time Trump made the comments. On an April 3rd edition of Fox News Sunday, Trump told host Chris Wallace that Japan might “in fact be better off if they defend themselves from North Korea.”
Wallace asked Trump if that included defense by “nukes.”
Trump responded, “Maybe they would be better off — including with nukes, yes, including with nukes.”

Trump has also speculated about using nuclear weapons in the Middle East and against ISIS, and said that “we need unpredictability” when it came to nuclear weapons. He also said he couldn’t rule out using nuclear weapons on Europe because “Europe is a big place” and he’s “not going to take cards off the table.”
