Plot twist: He's a senior in his last semester.

This is bsu. They only do this for freshmen. They also let em shoot a couple of times. I was there a couple years ago when a different kid made it.

Great opportunity to take the Van Wilder approach to education.

Those free tuition throws usually are only for one semester/year anyway.

Worse plot twist: Bevin causes Louisville to lose their accreditation before he graduates.

Edit: I don't do sports D: I saw red, I saw a bird mascot, I assumed Louisville.

That's not the Louisville Cardinals arena, The Yum center is way bigger/newer. You are right about Bevin being a fool of a governor and allowing that to happen though.

Freedom Hall was also a lot bigger.

Even worse: He lives in Denmark and it was allready free

Greetings fellow kentuckian!

Probably the only reason they even let him try.

but his 60 year loan could surely use a some balance reduction

Very similar to this except he had to hit a layup, a free throw, a three-point and a half-court shot in 30 seconds.

this is way more difficult

Gotta work for that tuition.

This kid made every shot look way more suspenseful than it had to be.

Rolls around rim

FUCK that was close

Hits rim, just gets in

HOLY MOTHERFUCKER that was close

Hits rim, bounces a bit, goes in

HOLY MOTHER OF LORD JESUS CHRIST that was close

Makes final shot

...

Well now where's the fun and suspense in that?

Sorry sir, your foot crossed the line.

Makes it again...

Sorry sir, your ball is not at regulation pressure. Since you didn't give us access to your cell phone a priori, we'll be suspending your scholarship for the first four years of college.

The NFL will also suspend Tom Brady four games.

And he traveled, took one too many steps without dribbling.

This is at ball state university in Muncie, IN. They do this every year at a freshman event.

I am waiting for some kind of hunger games event in the US where people fight for a university spot. Congratulations, you won't have to pay back money for the coming years after earning your degree!

[–]CuteGrill_Ask4Nudes 59ポイント60ポイント  (15子コメント)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's fucked up to make somebody perform tricks to afford an education

You're making some assumptions here. First off, how do you know his financial status? His parents could be loaded for all we know. Second, nobody is forcing him to do anything. They probably said "Hey, wanna shoot a shot for some free shit?" Anybody who would turn that down is stupid.

I can only chuckle at this and lean back in my chair knowing I get basically free Uni in Europe.

Feels good

In socialist Europe, you don't need to make a halfcourt shot for free tuition?

Nah just recite works of Marx by heart and pledge to take away rich peoples tax money. All while denouncing Americas capitalist ways. Che Guevara t-shirt is always a bonus.

yeah but what about healthcare. If this kid had some horrible injury while taking this shot, he'd probably make his family bankrupt paying for it.

WE GOT YOU THERE, EUROPE! We know how to ruin lives of people at random, what do you say, sir to that!

Nooooooo. It goes the other direction entirely. They sue the school for pain and suffering. Free tuition and doctor bills and more

More like the lawyer gets 50% of the settlement that covers 25% of his medical costs. Still bankrupt.

Lawyer gets 30% cut 60% of the time.

He's a freshman. VERY good chance he's on his parent's plan still, if not, many Universities have group healthcare students can sign up for.

Yearly deductible is now capped on the vast majority of plans - $6,600/person/year I think?

If he busted up his knee, that "event" would have a max out of pocket for the year, and then it'd continue as a 2016 event into the next year, so no more out of pocket.

Now under ACA - when you see a post on reddit about somebody's aunt owing $80k, and they "had insurance!", it's probably they misunderstood the "do not pay this - this is not a bill" notice they received, or they're full of shit.

I was betting the top comment would be from a European talking about tuition prices. I guess the 2nd top comment will do.

How about them tax rates.

[–]PM_ME_BABES_ON_BOATS 19ポイント20ポイント  (6子コメント)

I'd rather pay high tax rates and have practically free education and healthcare, compared to paying lower taxes and going bankrupt when I go to college or break a leg.

Livin' the debt free life of a student

College students don't worry about that until they actually work. Then 50 or 60 percent tax rates don't sound as nice.

My uncle is a small business owner.

His daughter was born with a bad heart defect that required several open-heart surgeries before the age of 5. They fixed it. His wife got breast cancer, which she got treated for and is now cancer-free. He himself eventually got a heart attack, which he survived - but needed a heart transplant. He got it as well.

Even with all the free health care, he had to loan money from another uncle to keep his business afloat while he was in the hospital all the time. And guess what? Now they're all pretty happy and are doing fine. His daughter just finished her Master's in Physics.

I shudder to imagine what would have happened to them in the US. Sometimes life just fucks you over - you don't need the health care system fucking you as well.

My bachelor's and master's degrees cost me around 800€ total. Including the tuition, textbooks and the mandatory bound copies of the master's thesis.

I got 10,000€ from the government and only need to pay back 5,000€. So essentially I got 5k for doing my bachelors and master's degree.

Nice. I wish I had been as good a student so that I would've gotten a similar "deal" out of it :)

In Norway this is pretty much the deal for everyone.. just not for the entire degree, but every year of studying. $12 840 a year in loans, when you have your degree 40% of that is waived. Plus there's no tuition at public colleges and universities.

Goddamn... my Bachelor's cost me over $30k (in student loans). And that was with a few small grants and scholarships thrown in.

I'm sure you'll make up for it in superior salary and lower taxes :) Everything isn't as black and white as people make it to be. For studying to be free, some other things need to be costly.

And gas cost to drive around?

And in 10 years someone else will earn their degree which will be paid for by your taxes. Nothing is truly free in this world.

That's not to say I don't think your education system is setup in a better way than in the states, it's just kind of annoying constantly hearing about the "free" tuition and "free" health care, neither of which are actually free.

Nothing worth having is free. Someone is paying.

You can get basically free uni in America. But good education costs money.

My bachelor and two masters cost me about 4k after deducting all the state subsidy.

yea, but the value of university is lower there

[–]PM_ME_BABES_ON_BOATS 12ポイント13ポイント  (3子コメント)

we have a similar thing in belgium, but instead of shooting at hoops from far away, the government pays for the biggest chunk of your school costs and practically nobody has student debt.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. Kind of a sad state of affairs in the US when you have to succeed at a public spectacle to afford a normal life.

you mean you pay for it

in my country you get 1. year free for all and after 1. year as long as you have good grades and do all your lecture it stays free you only pay if you fail.

so state taxis benefit only ones who are doing something

Freshman at BSU this year and this must be old, because the guy who shot this year definitely did not make it. But I'm pretty sure it's either free tuition for a Semester or a year (or maybe just reduced cost, I don't remember). But it isn't free tuition for ALL four years

"Published on Aug 21, 2015 Welcome Week got even brighter for one Ball State freshman. After being selected at random to participate, the young man sank a half-court shot, winning his tuition paid for a semester. Congratulations to him and the rest of the Class of 2019!"

"Congratulations! You won a giant check that says Free Tuition!"

It's kind of sad that people get this excited just so they don't have to pay for an education.

its kinda dope this guy gets a great education for free.

I mean, he probably would have been just as excited had he nailed to same shot for some free pizza. Free shit's exciting as fuck! :P

video with background story... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asg3KP9nZfk

Now we need to see it in slow motion a dozen times.

No, more! ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND TIMES

And not a single angle of the ball going in

I can't stop seeing the super-not-into-it girl at 0:18

How cruel if he didn't make it.

If he didn't make it, they would double his tuition cost.

Nice now he'll only be in debt for all the textbooks they make you buy. Unless he's smart and just uses the internet because no textbook contains information that can't be found online for free.

Man fuck you textbook makers.

This always gets brought up, but my (public) university had a textbook rental system. IIRC it was around $100 per semester to rent all your textbooks, with the option to buy your books at a used price at the end of the semester. I was in school from 2005-2009.

[–]Charizard_Allday 4ポイント5ポイント  (6子コメント)

Honestly that sounds like a great solution, but textbook manufacturers get around it by releasing new editions as often as possible and sending them to profs for free. The professors want to teach the most up to date and correct information as much as possible, so they always recommend that students have the latest editions if they want to get the best possible grade.

It's fucked up, but usually businesses will sacrifice any amount of their moral credibility to stay in business, and the print industry is hemorrhaging cash. That means the innocent students usually get stuck with the bill because they have no one to defend them from the vultures in charge.

My first few years on university, I shelled out mad money for every textbook "required" and all the official reading materials and read them as much as possible. I barely had time to keep up with the readings.

My last two years, I didn't buy one textbook and just did all my research online. I went from Cs to As.

You do not ever need to buy a textbook. It is 100% a scam.

You know the scam is real when the "update" (that makes the school no longer accept "outdated" versions) is 5 photocopied pages shrink-wrapped into the book.

My big issues are:

  1. When professors test of very specific examples from the text. I tried not to get the textbook for my archaeology intro class, and then the first test was entirely essays on specific examples from the book that aren't even the same as the examples in older editions. Fuck that.

  2. Workbooks. When classes require you to do work from a workbook and the workbook is hella expensive.

  3. When the professor wrote the textbook and uses physically possessing the textbook park of your grade.

[–]CuteGrill_Ask4Nudes 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

New textbooks also include a one time use passcode to get onto their website, and it's mandatory to do the online work in order to pass the class. This renders the book obsolete after you've used it, so now you can't sell it after the semester is over

[–]Charizard_Allday 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

All very good points. Workbooks make my blood boil. They're just photocopies slapped into a shitty duotang and they can cost over 150 dollars. Insane.

I will say I had a prof who wrote one of our textbooks and he actually assisted his new students in contacting his ex-students who were looking to sell. Good guy.

Yeah, the bookstore kinda told profs to fuck off if they were just switching to a slightly new version. It added a bit of latency to having the latest and greatest, but my wallet appreciated it. I think they stockpiled editions and only switched when they ran out.

[–]Charizard_Allday 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

That bookstore is run by heroes!

I'm going back to school this spring and the tuition and books are stressing me more than the classes ever could

[–]Charizard_Allday 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

You almost definitely will not need or use 95% of them. The library will have everything you need that the internet doesn't.

Unfortunately I have several math courses that will probably require the terrible teaching crutch that is mymathlab. Always requires a new book to get the code

[–]Charizard_Allday 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Great point. That's garbage for sure. Good luck dude!

Nice shot kid, that was one in a million.

Too bad the dean of that college is Jackie Moon.
