I would like to share this painting with you ass as I believe even in the darkest times evil can be pushed away to spare peace just for a few hours. In this case, the painting shows that soldiers can lack hate yet still show courage for what they believe is right. It depicts the Christmas Truce.
This painting submitted by /u/Crockett41195 depicts the Irish Brigade in the Battle of Fredericksburg.
The brigade consisted of Irish immigrants who were drafted into the union army. The backstory behind this image is sombre as this brigade faced the Confederate 24th Georgia infantry which was commanded by an Irishman, Col. Robert McMillan, and also many enlisted soldiers were also immigrants from Ireland. when Col. McMillan saw the green standard he cried "Oh God, what a pity! Here comes Meagher's fellows."
The following night as the Union retreated and many thousands lay dead and injured across the fields the northern lights beamed above through the sky.
