Jose, what was your assessment of tonight’s game? Hard work?

Mourinho:

Hard work. We deserved to win, we tried to win, but it was difficult. They were very well organised defensively, as we expected. And they tried to ‘Delay. Delay. Delay.’ which they did. They kept always the danger they have in the wingers in their counter attack. So the game was difficult so we had to play – I don’t say amazingly well, because we didn’t – but we had to play well to win.

Journalist:

Did Wayne Rooney help make the difference when he came on today?

Mourinho:

Yeah, he was laughing and saying that he made a great assist, but really he gave me what the team needed at that time which was a presence – a second presence – in the box. He’s more a striker than Juan, and Juan went more to the right side. Martial brought after the goal, freshness and speed also to try to kill the game which we didn’t - but, he was a positive presence too. We started the game with a very good team and I had on the bench also players to give me solutions for everything so we have proof that to win matches in the Europa league we need to be good. We need to play seriously, because there are good teams.

Journalist:

Fenerbahçe game in between Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City, so can you afford to take that game as seriously as you want to because you may want to win that game?

Mourinho:

Well, we could play Liverpool on the Saturday, we could play Liverpool on the Sunday… We play Liverpool on the Monday - so maybe we don’t have the best conditions, especially because we play against two top premier league teams that don’t play in the European competitions. So we have this kind of poison gift of playing on the Monday. That creates a very difficult situation, but we want to try to qualify for the next round - we want to try, you know? Long time to go, almost a month, but we want to try so we will play against Fenerbahçe with a team with possibilities to beat Fenerbahçe.

So when the Liverpool game was moved to Monday, were you keen to move it back to Saturday or Sunday, or is it impossible?

Mourinho:

I think it is impossible, the poison gift is already there so what can you do? We have just to play Monday and then Thursday and then Stamford bridge on the Sunday. But before that we have stoke so let us concentrate on stoke because Stoke is another poison gift because stoke is not what the table says, the manager is very good, the players are good, the team is good, so when I look to the table that’s not Stoke’s position. I play against a good stoke and not the Stoke that is in that position on the table.
