If I had to pick a favorite moment of last night’s debate — and I had a lot — it would have to be when Hillary Clinton called Trump out on the gross-ass comments he made about former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, namely calling her “Miss Piggy” because she gained some weight and “Miss Housekeeping,” because she was Latina.

“Donald, she has a name. Her name is Alicia Machado. And she has become a US citizen, and you can bet, she’s going to vote.”

Clinton followed up that burn by tweeting a video of Machado talking about her experiences dealing with Trump as Miss Universe, which includes a clip of Trump telling reporters “she weighed 118 pounds, or 117 pounds, and she went up to 160 or 170. So this is somebody who likes to eat.” Which is, of course, a completely evil thing for a woman to do. What a charming, charming man!


Certainly, it was necessary for Trump to be publicly horrible to Machado, on television, and to follow her to the gym with news cameras. That is definitely a thing that people who are not actual monsters do.

This morning, Trump sought solace in the loving embrace of the Fox and Friends gang, and attempted to explain away his behavior… by again calling Machado fat.

“I know that person. That person was a Miss Universe person,” he explained, like we didn’t all already know that. “And she was the worst we ever had, the worst, the absolute worst, she was impossible. She gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem. We had a real problem. Not only that, her attitude.”

AND IT WAS A REAL PROBLEM, he says. A five-foot-seven woman not being 118lbs is a real problem, and definitely cause to treat her like garbage.

For what it’s worth, the average weight of the American woman is 166.2 lbs.

He did not have the right to publicly humiliate her. There’s a difference. He did it the wrong way, and yes, at least part of it was to assert himself as the “alpha male.”

    Trump gave his weight at 236 pounds. If Trump is 6’2, that weight would make him obese, under U.S. National Institute of Health criteria. If he’s 6’3, he’s only overweight.

    A guy who goes around calling others fat probably doesn’t want to be defined as obese.

    At 5’7″ 160 is high side of normal and 170 is very low side of overweight, but 117lbs is underweight. Healthwise the 117lbs should be a way bigger concern.

    Ok, as a woman who willingly does a form of pageantry (muscle physique competitions) that involves ridiculous diet/exercise programs in order to walk around on stage in front of cameras wearing next to nothing, I just rage-stroked the fuck out when I saw this… I can’t even… the amount of ‘votes’ that I have for Trump is incalculable… Really… FUCK HIM….

    And I say this knowing, that yes, in this kind a competition, you are expected to have a physique that looks a certain way—BUT ONLY DURING THE COMPETITION/PHOTO SHOOT!!!!! You’re not supposed to look like that 365 days out of the year. It is not a sustainable way to live, because, true fact, it’s un-fucking-healthy.

    This is why I get so pissed when tabloids harp about this or that celebrity gaining weight (especially after pregnancy) when they just looked “so amazing” for this role or that photo-session. Those assholes (and Trump) are making fun of people for looking like their healthy normal-body weight selves. This was something I had to get over. Coming off a competition a competition physique and then looking like everybody else, it took a lot of mental strength to not look in the mirror and call myself “fat” because I can’t see my hip bones sticking out anymore. I may have gained 20lbs., but damn it, that’s because I was 20lbs underweight. So fuck him!!!!!!!

    * no, poems are not written, they are made. poet comes from the Greek ποιητής which means “maker”. the writing part is gathering material. then you make it into something. that is how it makes sense for Coleridge to have said, “Prose is words in their best order; poetry is the best words in the best order.”

    One thing that’s cool from that video: When Clinton says that Trump called women “dogs,” it was translated (as it should have been) into Spanish as “perras,” which is also how they translate the word “bitches.” So it actually comes off as a lot stronger language in Spanish than it does in English.

    It’s already insulting, but it takes on an even deeper pejorative meaning in Spanish.
