How the hell can an 8 year old be Transgendered?

[–]8bitbouncer 14ポイント15ポイント  (10子コメント)

I don't have info on this person, but it could be as simple as an 8 year old girl living life identifying as a male. You're probably thinking of 'transexual' involving surgery of some kind- which isn't always the case, even in transgender adults.

Do 8 year olds have the sexual maturity to define this things?

Did you know if you were a boy or a girl when you were 8?

I'm sure everything you thought when you were 8 hasn't changed at all.... It's almost as if we don't let children make life altering decisions because they have undeveloped reasoning skills, and find it difficult to rationalize long term consequences.

We aren't talking about some transient whim here. Kids aren't saying "I'm a boy today!" in play, then suddenly get told they have to live as a boy 24/7 forever.

When kids transition it's because they are in debilitating, constant, unrelenting distress that does not go away. Because they are socially isolating themselves and shutting down, stunting their social and emotional development, because being seen as the wrong gender is more than they can tolerate. Because kids as young as kindergarten are suicidal.

When kids transition, it's because the alternative is killing them.

By being born with a gender identity that isn't the one typically associated with their appearance.

People don't become trans, it's a situation some people are just born into. All trans adults were once trans 8 year olds. Between ignorance and hostility it used to be nearly impossible for trans kids to express their gender identity and be taken seriously, but that's starting to change now.

People don't become trans

This is actually not true. While gender dysphoria can be caused by genetic or developmental reasons, making the individual transgender from birth, it can also be caused by psyschosis, drug use, or brain injuries, where someone who didn't have gender dysphoria then develops it.

For example, here is a study about a man who developed gender dysphoria from chronic LSD use triggering a psychotic break. He checked in to a clinic for reassignment surgery, they did a mental heal evaluation (which is standard practice), discovered the psychosis, treated with antipsychotics, and resolved the GD.

That's not gender dysphoria. That's psychosis with very unusual symptoms.

The above comments are a great example of why the field of Psychology is so complicated.

Someone being called trans before going through puberty is simply a child who is showing preference to a certain style/behavior.

There is nothing inherently wrong with casting someone like this but doing so for corporate benefit is wrong. Treat him like anyone else and dont sell him as a token actor.

I thought the little brother on Girl Meets World came out as this

This is just great. I'm loving the progress we are making as people.

I feel like I've come a long way in changing how I feel about transgender people to be much more supportive. But 8 years old seems wayyy too young to be making those kind of decisions. Ultimately I'm not a doctor and I don't know this child or have anything bad to say about the child, so my opinion matters very little. But I have no idea how someone that age would even be able to recognize the difference between how they were born and how they feel. I don't know the specific situation, but my guess would be the parents were very involved in this child's decision (or realization, or whatever the proper word would be) to be transgendered.

No decision was made. Just the kid acting like himself.

They don't. They just act like themselves.

As mentioned, whatever the proper word would be. The child going on national TV and identifying as a transgender person will in some way impact their life. Whether it's a positive or negative impact, I don't know.

They don't. They just act like themselves.

Then why are they being labeled transgender if they're just acting like themselves?

The kid is transgender. Representantion matter.

Because it's a boy and has a feminine body.

Sure, but an 8 year old child is probably not who should be doing that representation. I don't want to just repeat myself but as I said I'm not a doctor or any kind of transgender expert. So I guess in 10 years or so if the child is still transgender then I'll have a better understanding of how early a transgender person can truly know they are transgender. And if they're not, then it's pretty fucked up to be putting them on national TV and saying they're transgender.

Gender dysphoria in children first manifest during early childhood (and always well before puberty). There are many kids in the same positions and sugesty they should wait until 18 to exist is ridicule.

Guarantee the kids parent moderates pages on Tumblr.

It's nice that a TV show can bring mental illness into the spotlight like this.
