The game is called Line Wobbler, and it runs on an Arduino, a 5 meter long LED strip and a self-made spring joystick I invented! The game itself is fairly simple, you control a green pixel, and you want to reach the other end of the strip, fighting 1D enemies and avoiding 1D lava on the way. There's 10 levels and a boss fight at the end. Here's a short video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLgtPKT1Q70

I've shown it at a few exhibitions and museums now, most recently at the Tokyo Game Show, where it won 4 awards, amongst them Best Game Design :D

The setup in the photo is from a museum in Perth, Scotland. It's by far the most beautiful setup I've seen of it - normally I just tape the LED strip to a wall. Here's some more photos: http://imgur.com/4Hna2iR http://imgur.com/lV0aSzI http://imgur.com/d3btd0G http://imgur.com/NtGpD4N

Where you from, mate?

Ze cat plays ze wobbler

Sounds like an introduction to a sophisticated musical society

"Robin Baumgarten" sounds very German to me.

Yep! In the excitement of the interview some of my dialect must have come through...

Tbh I didn't even notice it at first, only after I read that comment. Your English is really, really good.

Thanks! I've lived in the UK for 10 years, so that helped.

Like a German beatnik.

Talked to a man from India, that had spent years in UK then Australia , over a shitty connection on ps3 .

Could not understand a word the first half hour

I'm sitting here in Stirling, Scotland thinking "Man, I never get to play these things", then suddenly:

The setup in the photo is from a museum in Perth, Scotland.

I'm going tomorrow. What museum is it?

Sadly it ended already :(

It was the Perth Museum and Art Gallery

Nooooooooooooooo

I've never felt so bad for another stranger on the internet.... poor guy. :(

That was awful to read. You were so filled with a hurried joy to play, I genuinely got excited for you. Then to see it snatched away.

I'm so sorry, Honesty_Addict.

Man, you never get to play these things

I played it there. It was the best thing there, second was the high noon duel thing.

Is the code open? More details on the joystick?

The code isn't open at the moment, as I have a few commercial plans with the game (none of them very fleshed out yet though). I might make a kit version at some point.

The joystick is a spring with a simple accelerometer (mpu6050) on top of it. A smoothing algorithm combines the accelerometer and gyro data to return the angle and direction of the spring. The spring is custom manufactured now, but I used door stopper springs for a while.

The joystick is a spring with a simple accelerometer (mpu6050) on top of it.

Well now that's a novel way of making a joystick, instead of potentiometers or optical sensors measuring the joystick's exact physical position, you just slap an accelerometer on there, that's really cool.

only works if it's fixed to a stationary object, which is great in this case but bad for general use.

[–]Stabfist_Frankenkill 1ポイント2ポイント  (4子コメント)

Which museum, and do you know how long it's going to be on display there? I'm going through Perth in a few months and would love to check this out while I'm there.

Ah, unfortunately the exhibition in Perth ended already... If you're in London you might be able to play it in the Loading Bar soon, though!

[–]Stabfist_Frankenkill 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

Nope, California, but thanks for the response. Any plans to send it out here, or maybe make a digital version?

I'm also in California and was hoping it might be able to stop by the Exploratorium or the California Museum of Science.

I too would go to one of these places to play this game.

oh that looks niiiiceeee! would play

That is such a cool idea! In wich museum is it displayed?

How did you learn to do all this? Why did you make it?

I got to play the line wobbler when it was in Lexington KY for Run Jump Dev, Rules and Play exhibit, it was really awesome. The haptic feedback to the joystick and sounds are perfect, when I heard about it I was skeptical that a 1-d game could be anything but a curious abstraction, but playing it felt great and completely intuitive.

Played this at EGX in UK last year, I think I recall completing it! I was sad it wasn't back this year, I loved it. Hope you show it again next time.

That is shockingly creative. Wow.

Geile Idee. So simpel aber dennoch genial!

This needs to come to the EMP Museum in Seattle! They have an entire exhibit on indie games.

I saw this with my girlfiend in Perth a few weeks back!

I feel like o should get all mathy about this but I'll let it go since this seems more artsy (especially for Perth) than scientific or mathematical. It looks nice (especially for perth) just don't let them move it down the road to scumdee or someone will steal it to buy some kind of illicit substance

Oi, we have a new fancy artsy engineering museum opening soon actually. Maybe it could be moved to the V&A in Scumdee when it's finished in the early 2050's.

I don't get it. What is 1D? Does the line and enemies only move on one axis?

Yes. If the concept of this game expanded and the creator included more LED strips laid down next to one another and you could move your "character" from one strip to another while also moving up and down each individual LED strip, then it would be 2D.

How do you fight and make meaningful decisions in 1D?

This makes waaaaaaaay more sense. I was trying to figure out how he reasoned that the game only exists in one dimension of space. XD

The easier way to think of it is that you only control one aspect of the player's position, that being distance from the beginning of the line.

Oh man, were you showing that at Rezzed 1 or 2 years ago? I seem to remember something very much like it in the Leftfield Collection, and it was utterly fantastic! Me and my friend spent ages playing with it!

Yes I was, it was one of the first times I've shown the game back then! Here's a photo from Rezzed: http://imgur.com/hJ4sMUK

Significantly less spectacular setup there :D

Yup, that was the one! It was great fun - fantastic game dude! :D

I was there too! I did terribly.
Really fun though :)

How do you avoid the lava? What I get from the video is that it is always coming to you... You can't avoid death! (suppose you need something so no-one stays all day playing haha)

It seems to disappear for a sec and you have you to zip past before it reappears

That's right, it's a timing challenge! It's got three states: off, warning sizzle, and deadly

I don't know, the game seems kinda one-dimensional to me...

Very linear gameplay...

There's not even any side quests.

The characters seemed rather flat.

Graphics were pixilated too

Edit: Pixelated even.... /Derp

The Overall idea of the game is fairly straightforward.

No other angles of approach.

Pixel boob still does the trick though.

The mechanics are a bit shaky....

Have had this game mentioned on several game design lectures at Uppsala university. Great stuff man!

Haha, really? That's cool. Who was the lecturer?

Marcus Ingvarsson. We have a course called "Theme park" where we create games using a more unique input. Before the course he talked about several different examples of games with unique inputs and yours was one of them. =)

Congratulations and the installation looks awesome to boot!

Ah so you were the guy who made the LED line game that was at the Leftfield Collection last year?

Yes! It's been at most major game shows. I love travelling, so that worked out well!

Where can I buy one? Would love to have this at my house for parties. Would be cool to see some integration with music/spotify as well.

That is an absolutely gorgeous display for it. It's been a long time since I've seen something genuinely interesting on r/gaming.

I think I played an installation of this at the NOW Gallery in Greenwich Peninsula, South London.

I stumbled in and played it for a while, becoming equal parts frustrated and addicted. Once I was done, I stood around and explained the mechanics as best I could for other interested players.

Definitely worth a cross-post to r/Art for both the installation design and mechanics of the game.

Took the kids to the digiPlaySpace at the Bell Lightbox in Toronto and there were 3 hardness levels setup if I remember correctly. Really cool idea but man does it get hard! This installation is much more impressive for sure :)

I played this at AMAZE Berlin 2015!

Awesome to see it again :)

That's the coolest/strangest thing I have seen here all month.

This is probably the coolest thing I've ever seen...

By the way, if you wobble the door stop to fight enemies, how do you get past the lava?

I don't think I had a go but I definitely remember seeing this in London around July 4th. It looked pretty cool!

I was at the museum of moving image in New York and i got to try this out. it was a lot of fun, great job!

Played this with the kids at the exhibit at Perth Museum. Intuitive and fun. And I couldn't prise them away for 10 minutes, even with a wall of N64s and Megadrives on the opposite wall. Great work!

Played this in Perth this summer. Had a blast with it! Kids were looking at me funny for playing it so long. Great idea and build!

I love your work! This game is a blast!

I played it at Indiecade East a while back and I'm fairly sure I spotted it at the Hand Eye Society ball on Saturday here in Toronto and was happy to see a group of people gaping at it. It's really something unique.

From one dev to another, my hat's off. Cool stuff!

I DONT WANT TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM YOUR INVENTION:

But it needs to be said you built this beautiful badass installation, and nobody seems to have supplied you with a gosh darned cable conduit to hide the cord on the floor! >_<

They even sell them to match! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/andy905/ASH%20Products/conduit_kit_red-1.jpg

If it's one dimensional why can I can see it represented in space?

Same reason you can see 2D games represented in space!

"one-dimensional experimental hardware dungeon crawler game"
I don't understand what that means.

I dunno, man. The gameplay and story look kinda linear.

I don't know what this is but it's beautiful

How can i set this up all around my house?

Coming to Paris one day?

Possibly! It might make an undercover appearance near IndieCade Europe, mid November.

Is this the same game in Amaze Berlin 2015 ? I played that game and its amazingly fun. Wish you can distribute so everybody can play. Nice red cover by the way.

[–]Nomaki 0

Congratulations, looks a great setup!

I played it both at EGX and Norwich Gaming Festival, both times I found it great and managed to get a load of friends to enjoy it as well!

Anyone else see the thumbnail and think it was one of those portals from Zelda: A Link Between Worlds?

I saw this at TGS! It was pretty awesome!!

Very clever. Great game design can be simple!

Really beautiful piece, man. The dying effect is really awesome.

Did you take this game to Norwich once? I'm pretty sure i've seen this before.

Yes! It was in the Forum there, running up a glass wall.

That's really freaking cool.

I played this in Edinburgh at the Tech Hub during fringe. It was more fun than the VR stuff ! Really surprising !

OH EM GEE! I played this game at EGX. Super fun!

Was this up at this years Gamescom in Cologne? Because if so, I played it while waiting for my turn of Giant Cop and boy was I surprised how fun it was for being, you know, 1 dimensional and all.

Playing this was one of the stand out memories of GDC this year, kudos on the clever design.

I recognise this! I played something like it at an event in Sheffield, near the Showroom Cinema. Is it the same one?

Very inventive and fun game by the way!

Hey, i saw this (or something like this) at Respawn this year!

Hey, I remember playing this at Indiecade last time it was here at the Museum of Moving Image! It was hard, or maybe I just suck. There were a ton of other interesting games there too, like the telephone booth game where you're an operator, and the tank game where you control the tank using wheels on both sides of the "controller." Fascinating, but difficult stuff.

You guys ever wonder why your lives aren't cool? I do. Most times when I get on Reddit.

one dimensional dungeon crawler

So how did you institute the 'you must bring me 10 rat pelts' and 'I have some mail for you to drop off' quests?

Cool. I played it in Berlin but the setup was not as cool!!

Awesome stuff :D

You can't experience true 1D until you make the real world 1D.

So a toned done physical version of flappy bird?

What are the side quests like? Endgame content?

Saw something quite similar in a museum in Nuremburg about a year ago

I played this at a Children's museum I took my daughter to in Lexington KY of all places.

Cool concept. I wonder how far it could be taken.

I went there during the exhibition, it was pretty cool.

It makes much more sense after you watch the video!

I think I saw this at GDC's alternative controller exhibit a few years back! Super creative and cool! Glad you got an awesome display for it

I played this in Somerset House in London. Was very addictive and I became quite good at it.

Very well designed and lots of fun.

While the physical side of it is probably what makes it most interesting, it seems like you'd be able to get the gameplay itself handled with nothing more than a typical computer and a USB wobble controller. Is that where you are planning on going with this or are you wanting to mostly stick with arcade type venues and selling full kits?

Is there sound effects? Tell me it has sound effects.
