This has been requested in various forms for years, it's pretty obvious that it's not a path the admins are willing to walk for fear of shrinking Reddit's audience.

And you questions is...?

What more do you need? Just ban them...

How do I identify them when they can have multiple accounts? How can I identify their co-conspirators? If we just had some basic information about them (IP range, hash of browser/ip, etc). I'm totally open to suggestions...

It's a breach of privacy, and you don't need to identify them if they have multiple accounts. If they start spewing "propoganda" (which I think you're just labeling disagreement with you as such) then just ban them and delete their messages.

You don't know a thing about me, or my subs (as you took less than 10 mins to respond), but you've already decided my problem is I disagree with them... Perhaps its because they don't cite sources, use cognitive biases or are using false information?

FYI - Most of my subs are fairly small, and I can't be here 24/7. A small group of determined propagandists can do a significant amount of harm to a small sub just while I sleep. If you've had to recruit fellow mods, you know what a crap shoot that can be.

Edit: Also from looking at your subs, none of them appear to be potentially political or ideologically divisive, so perhaps you aren't the most experienced person dealing with these types of issues.

Someone who's recruited a crapton of mods here. I've also removed a whole bunch for inactivity, sure.

So far though, in the vast majority of cases if not all of them, I was eventually able to gather a large enough and active enough group to take care of all the reports, in a timely manner, in all of my few subreddits that aren't dead completely yet. So I'm not really sure why there's so much trepidation and hesitance associated with adding people. If I couldn't add people to help me mod, I'd either quit, or help out much less in, quite a few subreddits.

I'm really open to suggestions here. You really hit the nail on the head with inactive mods. Should I be cutting them?

The way I go about this is I ask if a potential mod would be OK with being removed if they do less than one mod action (removal/approval of stuff) a month (two months on small subs) without prior notice.

The limit is pretty loose but I don't remember any mods "abusing" it. From what I've seen, one of thee things happen:

  • mod gets added, does absolutely (or almost) nothing

  • mod gets added, helps out for a bit (gets burned out?) then goes AWOL in the modlog

  • mod gets added, helps out regularly, much more often than my limit

I keep the last guys and kick the first two after the aforementioned period of time. IIRC, nobody's yelled at me for kicking them out so far, though to be fair it could be either because of the above policy or because everyone I've kicked out has been too nice to complain.

So anyways, I think this is a fair way of approaching this. I've also kept the mods that were on the team before I made up this policy even if they're inactive, because I felt it's unfair to kick them when they didn't promise me anything.

TL;DR your current ones, no. New ones, yes.

Ok, thanks for the perspective. I didn't worry about this until this political cycle, and all of a sudden its become a huge problem. I'm just as much to blame as the mods not pulling their weight. I guess I need to layout the rules more clearly, and ensure they are being followed.

This time is no more crucial than any other.

If you see shills and trolls and propagandists everywhere, /r/conspiracy is that way. Just be sure to be really melodramatic about it so I can take the piss out of you in TMoR.

Yup.

To be fair, political trolls like OP aren't interesting to me.

I come for the reptilians, but stay for the hollow earth / moon is a hologram / planes can't fly.

Apparently someone was very annoyed at my question seeking clarification, because they've downvoted us both.

Those same, sad bridge-dwellers

They disagree with me so are obviously Shills or Trolls!
