What I find most interesting is the possession stats being down in every game yet the pass accuracy is actually up on last year.

Clearly illustrates the difference between passing with purpose v. passing because 'philosophy'

What I find interesting is that mindless sideways passing should result in an extremely high pass accuracy. However, we're taking more risks this season in the final third and yet our pass accuracy is higher.

Not perfectly sure but what I am thinking is the rate at which we are passing the ball or the frequency is higher than last time. The speed on the ball when we pass, the time each player runs with the ball is also less than last time I assume. Would like to know the total number of passes attempted on each game though to be more sure...

Yeah that would be interesting. I think pass accuracy and where the passes are made are of more importance than simply a possession stat. I think football has become far to obsessed with it. In my mind possession should be used to create space in other areas of the pitch by dragging the opposition out of position. This obviously requires quick transitions. Something most clubs lack the ability to do accurately and consistently

Isn't possession basically just the total passes made in contrast to the opposition?

So possession is going down because we make less passes relatively to the opposition than before. The successful passes go up because the number of passes is lower overall and so have a lower impact on the % when unsuccessful.

(Bear in mind, I'm absolute shite at maths, so... >_>)

Possession is how long one team is in control of the ball compared to the other surely?

[–]RVallant 2ポイント3ポイント  (1子コメント)

It used to be time in possession, but that was scrapped in... 2011/12? Not sure.

Opta now record possession in a football match by means of an automated calculation based on the number of passes that a team has in a game.

During the game, the passes for each team are totalled up and then each team’s total is divided by the game total to produce a percentage figure which shows the percentage of the game that each team has accrued in possession of the ball.

As I understand it, this is why more passes = higher possession % rate.

Hmm, that's interesting. Would explain why BT, Sky and BBC all have different possession stats.

Well you're comparing games which we lost to games which we won. Part of the reason we lost those games is because we played badly, and part of that is the poor passing. Bournemouth away was a horror show with our young kids getting made to look like little lost boys. It wasn't exactly sterile domination. Southampton at home was a terrible game and neither side played particularly well.

I'm just making comparisons on the stats given mate. Just wanted to make conversation.

Must have been so easy for teams to get pressure on us when it was just mindless sideways passing. Passing with intent obviously makes them think twice before rushing in and getting tight in case someone just nips one round the corner and starts a break.

[–]KCURBailly 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Exactly. I'm all for playing sound, controlled football, but you have got to have that killer mentality and attacking intent or else defenses have time to set up that pressure->cover->balance in front of you.

Apart from the new top class players coming to the team, some credit for our passing has to go to LVG. Despite not being the most attacking philosophy, the players are now more used to controlling a game, passing it around, and controlling the tempo of the game. Not saying entirely his work, but surely he deserves a little credit for it.

Total Shots +18 shots

On Target +13 shots

this stat is going to look ridiculous by the end of the season.

It already kind of does 3 games in...

Goals For is going to be amazing again I hope.

Right now this doesn't really tell us much we didn't know:

Under Mourinho we are better; we are picking up more points, scoring more goals and conceding less goals (also we are actually shooting more too. I won't get frustrated with random shots this season because I remember how frustrating it was last season when nobody would shoot).

I think this post may become more interesting as the season goes on though.

[–]Poolooloo 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Yeah taking more shots is the biggest difference for me. Idk if we shot from outside the box more than 3 times the whole time LVG was here. Not every one of the shots we took at Hull was quality but you have to take those shots to see a few of them go in. Coutinho only gets those awesome goals cause he tries to score from range 12 times a game. Nobody remembers the hundreds of balls that go into the stands, they just remember he scored 4 screamers.

I feel like it's hard to compare this season's southampton to last season's. They basically no longer have any attackers.

[–]TheTrackPadUserRashgod 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Southampton one year on vs Man Utd one year on. You can compare them.

that Jose plays a boring football is one of the biggest misconceptions in football

[–]burnedgoatZlatan 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Indeed, most managers would play entertaining football compared to that shit show last season though.
