Interesting conversation on The Football Ramble surrounding Wayne Rooney (self.reddevils)

This was a conversation that was had on the latest Football Ramble - unfortunately I don't know who is who so I am not sure which member said this.

'I think he (Mourinho) would look to phase Rooney out next summer but I think if he were to come in now and say, 'Right you're on the bench' he may anger the fans, he may cause a bit of controversy.

Mourinho has wanted this job for ages and this is perhaps the only club that Mourinho will actually exercise a bit of humility and so I think he is trying to play the long game. If he bombs Rooney out now I think it's too early whereas if he phases him out slowly the fans can go 'yeah he needs to move on'"

I think it is an interesting point to note that Mourinho wants this to be a long term job and not to lose the dressing room which has happened at previous clubs. I think this could be the reason why Rooney has not been dropped, less to do with the fans and more to do with the dressing room.

The conversation continued on whether Mourinho would essentially sacrifice the title if Rooney continues to play which one of the case believes he would do in order to get his way.

Thought this was worth sharing.

Yeah I've considered this too. But not sure if it stands up to scrutiny, especially since Mourinho has been like a wrecking ball in his recent press interviews which doesn't exactly support the whole "not wanting to upset the dressing room" argument. To be fair though there aren't any explications that are wholly satisfying with the Rooney conundrum. Fergie set-up his predecessor to easily discard him and Moyes completely botched it (along with other things, obviously) by offering him that mega long-term contract. And then van Gaal made him captain. And then Mourinho keeps playing him. And we're all on here scratching our heads wondering what the hell is going on.

Mourinho can see the decline much better than we can and the negative effect Rooney is having on performances but there's also no real great alternative yet and he's just biding his time, I fully expect a big name to come in and replace him next summer (Griezmann 10). Look how strong half the fans and his friends support him even still.

Before the end of the year he will be on the bench regularly as long as Martial, Rashford, Ibrahimović perform and Mkhitaryan shows half of what he did at BVB! Add Mata and Lingard to the list but he should never ever play in midfield again.

We have several great alternatives in Mata, Herrera, Mhiki, Pogba or we just don't use a #10 at all.

You need to have positive short term results in order to achieve long term results. Mou won't have a job if we don't get the results with Rooney in the starting XI.

that is what i think too. but i am disappointed by Mourinho's lack of balls. Guardiola at City discarded big names immediately and i was hoping Mourinho would do the same here so that we dont waste a season and endure another year of frustration. its annoying to lose when you know that your starting 11 could be better if one or two players were dropped for better players on our bench.

Why did he not drop ivanovic last year? I think its a simple matter of thinking, Mourinho thinks team is better off with rooney rather than without him. Of course he is wrong.

He did for a couple of games but they had only Baba as backup. Chelsea failed to buy him one.
