A Carrick/Pogba/Herrera midfield is promising, but I feel as though Blind deserves a shout there soon (self.reddevils)

First just a little word on yesterday. People spoke yesterday about how well Carrick controlled the game, slowed it down at the right time etc.

I remember posting a thread on this almost a year ago, last season Carrick and Herrera had a couple of games there together and they played brilliantly. We then had a couple of games where our midfield wasn't strong enough, or quick enough. This is where the Herrera Carrick idea stopped.

What I like about a 3 man midfield is that Pogba has all the qualities that the midfield was missing at that time. So it could potentially be a successful recipe.

Now onto my point. Carrick is a great player, but he can't control every game like this, also not for that much longer. He is now 35 and we can't rely on him every game. Someone else who I think could do this job very well is Daley Blind.

I really feel as though Blind should be given a chance alongside Pogba.

He is just such a calming influence on the pitch. He has an amazing pass on him (when I went to see us at Old Trafford recently his passing was really something that stood out as quality play), a great football brain too, which he shows at vital match times. Also actually very good defensively.

What are your thoughts on this?

How do you think he would fair?

Carrick won't be able to play 90mins every 3/4 days so he's not the answer to our midfield problem.

I think it's clear we still need to recruit, maybe even in Jan, Weigl from BVB looks ideal and played well with Mkhitaryan last season.

Weigl would cost us £50m+ in the summer let alone mid season.

We're not getting Weigl especially in January. Teams don't sell players of that caliber mid-season.

Should he get a chance? Yeah absolutely. Should he get it against Leicester? I think that's asking for another 5-3.

There is no doubt that Blind has an excellent range of passing, he has put it on display for us all to see the last 2 seasons. However, the times he has played as a CDM and been faced with a high press, he has been ran rings around; the fact of the matter is, neither Carrick nor Blind can really play when the opponent presses as ferociously as Leicester do. Since Scholes left we were meant to plug this hole in our midfield, and frankly we haven't done that properly yet.

What Blind makes up for with his vision, I think he lacks with the mobility required to play as a CDM. I think having Blind and Pogba as the two in a pivot might just be disastrous, considering Mou might not exactly shift to a 3 man midfield soon.

Not bashing Blind or anything, I think against smaller teams in the EFL or even in the Europa League he could potentially play there, however I think the pace and physicality of the EPL might be a bit much if the opponent presses high.

To be fair, the role Scholes adopted towards the end of his career didn't require much mobility because his reading of the game was so exquisite that he always created space for himself and the rest of the team. This is Carrick's strength as well, though he's not ever been at Scholes' level.

The only problem with Blind in the DM role is that when we get turned over and the opposition break he will be caught for pace to cover the ground. I understand he has good positioning but you needy your DM to cover the ground and make the tackles and he cant do it. He is perfect for DM role when we have the ball because he can use hos range of passing but without it we could be opened on the counter. IMO we need to put either Ander or Morgan in there because they are the most mobile.

This has been discussed to death but anyway...

IMHO Blind will never be a top tier deep CM because he doesn't have the vision or quick distribution necessary. He played there plenty under Van Gaal and was found lacking.

We have still not really got a replacement for Carrick as he gets older. Arguably we haven't replace Scholes since he retired. Schneiderlin is supposed to be that replacement but it remains to be seen whether he is good enough.

Blind has a great passing game for a CB and he is very useful for that reason. It's not on the same level as Carrick's though and nowhere near the top tier midfielders in the world (of which Carrick is still not one IMO).

Fellaini has surprisingly performed this role pretty well so far this season - great passing accuracy, good awareness - he's just been let down in a midfield 2 with Pogba whose positional discipline is not as good.

I remember when Blind played there as DM under LVG, I felt as though he was extremely isolated, I also remember people posting funny formations showing how big the gap was between Daley and the rest of the forwards.

Not making excuses, I just really would like to see what he could do in a more busy midfield where it isn't his job to do everything at once, but more just calm the game down, and play that incisive pass, for me he finds those passes much much better than Fellaini can. In fact, Fellaini doesn't find any of those passes, he plays more simple passes.

That's understandable. I'd certaily be interested to see him in that role against a weaker opposition to see how he fairs. For me the gulf between him and Carrick in that position is significant. I think we either need Schneiderlin to step it up or we need to look into a long term replacement now the Rooney experiment is over.

I d rather have Ruben Neves in January he is more Carrick player than Blind will ever be. Even LVG who really liked Blind and wanted to make him starter for us never trusted him in that position. Blind should stay as back up CD especially against weak opponents.
