1959 Austin A40 Countryman Hatchback
For the classic European car enthusiast, here is a rare, stellar example of the Austin A40 Farina Countryman hatchback with just 12 miles on the odometer since a complete frame off restoration. This vehicle has been owned by the seller since 1965 and the process of making this car new again has been underway for decades. Virtually every component of this Austin has been painstakingly renewed, replaced, or repaired, if necessary to produce a nearly pristine vehicle, much as it was when it was brand new. This car was issued for the American market with left hand drive, and it starts at the touch of the ignition key, runs smoothly and quietly, and has no electrical, mechanical or aesthetic issues.
This Mark I version of the Countryman (produced from 1958 to 1962) has a rear luggage gate that drops down below the rear window and the cargo space behind the rear seat can be concealed by a vinyl tonneau cover. If more space is needed, the rear seat folds down so the rear area behind the front bucket seats may be used for cargo.
The Countryman hatchback design was a collaboration between British Motor Car works and Pininfarina of Italy. The result was this small estate car, or mini-station wagon that provides economical and practical service for local transportation. The car is powered by a 948 cc in-line 4 cylilnder engine and has a 4 speed manual transmission. Both the engine and transmission have been completely rebuilt and are in excellent condition. Valve seats have been hardened for use with unleaded regular grade gasoline. It has independent front suspension with coil springs and the live axle has semi-elliptical leaf springs at the rear. The front drum brakes are hydraulically operated and rear brakes are cable actuated.
This car has been reupholstered in a tasteful combination of cloth and vinyl that complements the light blue metallic exterior. The heater, aftermarket AM/FM/cassette sound system, and all lights and switches are fully operable. The bumpers, chrome and stainless steel trim, rubber, glass, carpets, and upholstery are new and impeccable. The only flaw in this car is a small paint crack over the left front fender well.
This Austin A40 may be the best one of its type anywhere. It is ready to drive or show, and needs nothing but a new owner. Serious inquiries are invited and we encourage any prospective buyer to come inspect this beautiful little Countryman hatchback.
