Here's my notes from the first half:

1' Carrick beautiful forward pass to Memphis over the top in to the box. 3' Herrera chance, good attacking thus far.

Carrick and Schneiderlin sitting deeper, Herrera attacking. Still fluid though with the 3 rotating to an extent. Smalling - Blind partnership is back, good chemistry between the two and Blind is doing the distribution

6' Carrick good forward ball to Rojo at the line to start a play with memphis dribbling in to the box, memphis passes to top of box, couldn't finish the chance.

8' Schniederlin good forward ball upfield to TFM

midfielders clearly instructed to look for these balls to the fullbacks making runs down the line, 3 passes like this played in the first 10 min.

11' TFM great pressure to keep the play going forward, couldn't finish the chance, Northampton playing very compact.

On the attack Rojo pushes up far, Memphis slots in close next to Rooney, seems he's been given permission to roam a bit, Young staying wide on the right however.

14' Herrera great pash through the defense to Rojo, Rojo puts a perfect cross in front of goal, Rooney doesn't get to it.

16' Backpass to keeper called, close set-piece inside the box. Rooney takes the shot, deflects off the wall, Carrick with the well placed shot to the back post, nice goal.

After the goal Northampton pressing hard

24' TFM throw in to Herrera behind the enemy backline, couldn't make anything of it.

27' Holding the ball well, working it around the field. Can't help but feel we'd really benefit from having someone besides Herrera in the 8 role, looking at our formation while attacking there is too large of a gap between Carrick-Schneiderlin and Herrera, he's sticking too close to Rooney on the attack.

31' Schneiderlin with a great ball overhead to the back post, TFM comes in with a cracking header off the post, Rooney finishes the follow up but is called offside.

33' Blind pushing up well, provides a good ball through the defense to Rooney who should've gotten a better cross in, ball goes out of play.

Midfielders working harder to get back and cover, better communication along the backline for marking than there was during the Watford match.

38' Some confusion between TFM and Herrera, Herrera had inside covered but TFM stepped inside and gave away a shot on goal.

Front 4 very fluid, Herrera moving wide right, Young moving in next to Rooney, clearly more fluidity and movement than under LVG.

41' Stupid penalty given away, Blind commits the foul but slow play and poor intensity from TFM gives the ball away inside the box when it should've been cleared out. Situation could've been avoided

45' Very awkward play at the top of the box as Romero comes for a long ball, should've stayed back if he was going to wait for the ball to come in to the box and let Smalling deal with it.
