SROTD Archives: Dozens of redditors have worked with Subreddit of the Day over the years. Sometimes those features slip through the cracks as writers come and go. We dig them up and get them posted and to honor the subreddit. This is one such feature.
2,584 of the enlightened have been making the journey for 4 years!
Among the fields of wandering cattle, incessant beasts and daffodils, there resides a strange breed of humanoid. A caustic mixture of man and technology, this unique creation is able to thrive and progress in this bountiful land of milk and honey. Through some random mutative miracle, this strange breed has developed a way to see the world as being flat. An unlikely ability that reveals the way to see both sides to everything. It's this small collective of individuals, that are the best candidates to experience a wondrous trip around the world and through the stars to a destinations unknown. Some individuals dont need to explore to find happiness. They find joy in the simple things of life and need no further experimentation but for others, the coarse of fulfillment is a little more complex and needs to be prospected. One of the most beautiful things about deciding to adventure is experiencing the fantastic and amazing cultures that are out there. One of the most interesting and mysterious, is arguably the drug culture.
Before the age of the internet, if a few brave spirits wanted to venture to the edge, you went blind. Armed with only sparse information collected excitingly while skipping class in a high school bathroom, these valiant explorers set out to navigate their way through the unknown crevasses hiding in the pitch black of propaganda. Many brave warriors were lost to ignorance and neglect in those days but through the collaboration of billions of chipboards, the internet has allowed the power of light to shine on these desolate, darkened caverns and illuminate the way to personal nirvana.
One site dedicated to being such a torch, is the humble Erowid.com. Over the years many have been able to pull themselves from the clutches of the edge and return to the safety of the flock to tell the tales of their most glorious adventures. As years past, visions of the orange juice man were replaced by the much more educational experience of the enlightened traveler. Solid self studies that have been documented and now show others the safest path to the other side of a lucid dream. Make no mistake, this site exists to educate and look out for one another. You don't have to be a hardened addict to find your way to a site like this. The information provided can be used for many different purposes. Let us suppose an innocent grandmother were to fall ill with a seasonal flu. She's heard stories of the dangers of taking too much cough medicine but how much is too much? Sure you could read the label or go to webdoctor but are those resources going to tell you how to avoid the treacherous fifth plateau. I think not!
One of the greatest things about reddit is the ability to honor the best of the internet. One of the best things on the internet is Erowid. When you combine these two great tidal forces, you manifest the wondrous /r/bestoferowid and rightfully crown it Subreddit of the Day! Get your ass over there and nominate your own favorite submissions, you courageous wayfarers. Enough of this supine rambling, time to let the mods tell it like it is!
1. How are thing, how's it going?
camdemonium Busy but good, just how I like it.
bigwax It's Christmas break and for the first time in a while I have no obligations. It's safe to say I'm in a pretty good mood.
2. What type of soul would you expect to wander into your subreddit?
camdemonium I love hearing trip reports. Hearing about others experiments with illicit substances, whether enlightening, overwhelming, or downright awful, brings a different perspective to these substances that are so maligned and misunderstood in our society.
bigwax Curiosity. As much insight as these anecdotes provide, you can't ignore the embedded entertainment value. I find it hard to understand how someone can be so disinterested in the idea that there exists something that you can consume that will remove all filters and challenge everything you thought you ever knew. It doesn't take a drug user to be fascinated by this. I nerd-out on things I haven't even taken.
3. What is your favorite or most important post?
camdemonium I still can't find the damn thing on erowid, I am hoping someone will post it! It seems I don't even remember most of the details anymore...
bigwax Favorite would have to be 'Jedi Mind Tricks'. It's long but well written.
4. I you were to ever experiment with a substance, what do you think would be your drug of choice?
camdemonium I ran the gamut of substances in my younger years, although I'm only mid 20's now. I was always attracted to the mystique associated with psychedelics, and while the most memorable experiences I had with those substances were by far the most unpleasant experiences of my life, they also strongly shaped the person I am today in a positive way.
These days I'm more into nootropics and cognitive enhancers, shoutout to /r/DrugNerds , as I am busy pursuing a Masters Degree.

5. What do you think is the most important thing about this subreddit and why was it started?
camdemonium I started this subreddit as a way to save some of my favorite trip reports and also help merge two communities that I spent a lot of (too much?) free time on. I also think that while erowid is an amazing website, and their trip reports format are excellent methods of documenting an experience with a substance, oftentimes they become kind of lost in the fray. I hope this subreddit can be a way of highlighting the best ones, what "best" means is in this case up to the community to decide.
bigwax /r/BestOfErowid aggregates the most interesting reports found on Erowid.org. Unlike what information most of us were brought up on, Erowid is non-biased and documents all cases, positive or negative. It's filling a gap that the state chooses to ignore. The spirit of the Erowid organization is a pursuit of understanding. To quote the founders vision:
"We imagine a world where people treat psychoactives with respect and awareness; where people work together to collect and share knowledge in ways that strengthen their understanding of themselves and provide insight into the complex choices faced by individuals and societies alike. We believe that truth, accuracy, and integrity in publishing information about psychoactives will lead to healthier and more balanced choices, behaviors, and policies around all psychoactive medications, entheogens, herbs, and recreational drugs. Erowid's vision is to facilitate and create resources that are part of the evolution towards this goal."
Don't forget to tune in, turn on and drop out....
