The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, I have to read it for school. Now I have even more reason to hate this book.

Wasn't that about the emo kid?

For some reason I thought the book would be about an IT guy in India that works part time. TIL I'm a bit racist.

I can never tell when seeing "Indian" written whether it refers to a Native American or someone from India

That's what I assumed automatically. Except the main character worked at a call centre. I feel like an ass but meh. It was funny.

I would assume it's in the schools reading list and the teacher picked the book.

I'd assume that if this is a teacher that has been there a while, she knows the book, had all the handouts etc prepared already from previous years and is being lazy. I assume this because teachers do this all the time.

Wow, just picked up the same book for school last week. It was a hell of a ride, keep that "Absolutely True" part in the back of your mind when reading what pops up though.

That book is shit, read it last year. Fuck that book, it's a generic story that ends exactly as you'd expect.

It's also one of those "and I saw Bill Clinton and he gave me 100%$&¥!!!!" stories where it's obvious none of that shit would happen.

Who actually talks like that? Also I still get triggered by people who think Macs don't count as a PC.

PC, personal computer, a computer for personal use. What is a Mac? It ain't a fucking mainframe, that's for sure.

In the 2010s, PCs run using an operating system (OS), such as Microsoft Windows, Linux (and the various operating systems based on it), or Macintosh (OS).

Right from Wikipedia. It puzzles me how some people seem to think Mac has its own hardware category that isn't a part of PC's.

Pretty sure that's the result of those Mac vs PC adverts.

That's not what that says. To paraphrase:

PCs run using an operating system (OS), such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, or Macintosh.

Yes, it should probably say 'Mac OS X' rather than 'Macintosh (OS)', but it's still technically correct (the best kind thereof). It's almost literally outright stating that Macs are a subset of PCs, by saying OS X is a PC OS.

Not as bad as someone who used consoles as a server in another book. Also, it could "use all the consoles in the world" to compute stuff. Maybe that's why they're all so underpowered.

People have totally done that. "Running Linux on an XBox" was a popular meme on The Daily WTF forums for a while.

Didn't people use to build GPU farms with PS2s or something?

PS3- specifically because of the cell processors compute bandwidth. Then Sony pushed out a firmware update that removed that feature and got sued.

What problem were they trying to fix by doing this? They didn't want people buying their consoles if it wasn't for gaming?

[–]TheZechArch Linux 9

It cost them more to build a console than what they were selling it for. They only made money on licensed games, which means every PS3 bought for something else than gaming, was a loss.

Nope, because they'd only buy the ps3, I assume. Ps3s were sold at a pretty big loss, so they'd want the consumer to keep buying stuff for it to give real profit.

[–]LutjaSuki2600k. 32gb, gtx1080,26tb disk, Potato Internet 0

they gained access to all of the machine's computing power when the linux version was supposed to be limited. People were homebrewing full 3d stuff and sony freaked out (for unfathomable if predictable reasons)

Shortly after they removed homebrewing support the PS3 was thoroughly jailbroken for piracy and everything by the newly motivated coders.

[–]LutjaSuki2600k. 32gb, gtx1080,26tb disk, Potato Internet 0

if you actually manage to do that with a console then you are bloody awesome. Consoles stop being peasant devices after they are jailbroken and you start writing homebrew.

Researchers were doing it all the time, actually. The last generation of consoles was pretty powerful, and really good at parallel computing. Some researchers opted to network them and use them for simulation.

Nobody did that with the underpowered current gen, of course.

[–]MrHaxx1i5-2500k, 6GB RAM, R9 290X ... also Macbook Air 0

You got downvoted, but that's very much what the military did with the PS3. Installed Yellow Dog Linux on them, put them in a cluster and used it as a server.

I've never read this book, but this doesn't seem like peasantry to me. The protagonist thinks Gordy is a freak for saying this.

Correct me if I am wrong, though. There could absolutely be something right in the next paragraph that turns it on its head.

[–]AmorphousGamerGTX970/i5 4690k/2x4GB memory 6ポイント7ポイント  (1子コメント)

I believe the "freak" part is more in the context of "wow this guy sure knows too much about computers!" rather than "wtf does this guy really think macs are better than other pcs?"

Haha, yeah, I don't think it was supposed to show the author being "PCMR before its time", the protagonist just seems to dismiss it as the pretentious boast it is. But by the way some people act here, you would think it was a quote from the author himself.
