[Discussion] Can Blind replace Carrick? (self.reddevils)

Can Blind replace Carrick? From the comments in the past few weeks, majority agreed that Blind is definitely not a natural CB, hence mistakes to a few of the goals.

With Carrick (close to retiring), can blind fill up the deep defensive playmaker role?

IMO, I might be wrong, Fellaini is taking up that role now. Yes, granted Fellaini is pretty okay defensively, but I think he lacks discipline (starts elbowing when we are losing) and vision for counter attacking build up.

Thoughts?

Edit : Seems like many thinks that Blind isn't really up for the job. But how is Fellaini picked over him at DM. Love to hear your thoughts :)

I think Blind got the same ability as Carrick when it comes to play the ball through the lines of the opponent. This is something we desperately need at the moment, and I think both of them is capable of doing just that.

Thats what I thought too. But why didnt LVG nor Mou play him there .

LvG did play him as a CDM in his first season. In terms of last season he was our second best CB so he was needed more in the central defence than in midfield.

LVG did play him there and he was awful. Opposition players strolled past him all game long and he struggled to do much passing wise when pressed in midfield

Our form dropped off a cliff once Blind replaced Carrick at the base of that 4-3-3 in LVGs first season. We went from controlling games, and soundly defeating teams like Spurs, Liverpool and Man City, to losing against West Brom at home, and getting beaten 3-0 by Everton. We won 6 games on the trot with Carrick in midfield, and when he got injured, proceeded to lose the next three with Blind at the base.

Our other great period of form during that season, the one during November and early December also came once Carrick, who was injured during the beginning of the season, replaced Blind in midfield. 3 wins in the first 10 games of the season without Carrick. And 6 wins straight with Carrick back in the lineup instead of Blind.

I've always seen Blind as a perfect defensive play maker. Somewhat like what Cesc was played in Chelsea under Mou. Also, cesc's defensive work is never near what Blind has. So I dont really get why Fellaini is picked over Blind.

IMO, it's nice to have another player in the team who has vision, instead of relaying it all on Pogba. He is choked every game. Whenever Pogba gets the ball, you see 2-3 players press him immediately.

Fabregas is a miles better passer of the ball than Blind.

Blind played defensive midfield under LVG and was crap there, he is a long long way from perfect

Loads of games after Carrick got injured and our form went to shit in LVG's first seasons.

He also played there and was massively responsible for the Leicester 5-3

Yep ! I don't deny that Fabregas is way better at passing. But we also can't deny that Blind is way better at defending when compared to Fabregas. But Blind does really well covering defensive errors by the CB's. We see that many times under LVG.

What I think is, he is a decent defensive playmaker, but I dont see how is Fellaini better.

I remember Blind's first game for us. He started at CDM and we trashed QPR 4-0. (it was the last time we scored 4+ goal difference in PL btw) and it was looking good. Unfortunately in his second game as a CDM we got humiliated by Leicester. And after that we never really saw Blind in that position ever again. But I think we should give him another shot there. Especially considering that in the 5-3 Leicester game, we had a diamond formation with midfield of (apart from Blind) Di Maria, Herrera, Rooney. Not exactly a defensive masterminds.

We saw him there at the end of the 14/15 season. 6 games in a row after Carrick's injury.

It transformed the team and our form, but not in a good way.

Carrick had been crucial to an amazing run of form with United playing some fantastic football under Van Gaal, hammering the likes of City, Spurs and Liverpool in a run which secured a return to the Champions League. He took the DM role and played passes under pressure to the attacking midfield of Fellaini and Herrera, with Mata and Young wide of Rooney up top. Teams just couldn't cope.

Then Blind filled in for the remaining six games.

We won one of them. When he was pressed, he was too slow on the ball. He wound up being dispossessed or picking the wrong pass too many times, slowing the attack down, allowing teams to set up to mark the front men and inviting pressure onto our own defence.

We went from 6 straight wins (Sunderland, Newcastle, Spurs, Liverpool, Villa and City, scoring 15 and conceding just 4) with Carrick pulling the strings to 3 straight defeats without scoring. We collected 5 points from 18 (scoring 3, conceding 7) with Blind in the Carrick role as compared to 18 using Carrick himself. The football was slow and dull as compared to the run just before.

He wasn't very good when pressed in the first season playing midfield. Will need to have more games there to have a more accurate evaluation.

He wasn't very good in cb either though. He was just Meh. Blind has grown immensely the last 2 seasons

I've been saying it for a while: Blind's skillset is best for the CDM role.

The same people who say Blind is too slow for the CDM role want Carrick, but Carrick isn't exactly Gareth Bale.

Blind should play behind Pogba and Fellaini/Schneiderlin/TFM.

We have great depth in CM, which is why I see how Mou was able to put Schweinsteiger aside.

Carrick doesn't have pace, but he's far faster at actually passing the ball than Blind. He doesn't blink under pressure, he just calmly makes the pass.

Blind takes too long to find the right pass, and when pressured he all too often either gives it away or passes it backwards.

Passing the ball out from defense where the only pressure comes from 1 or 2 strikers is a lot easier than passing it from midfield which is the busiest part of the pitch.
