These things are cyclical. 442 is a bit outdated today because most teams play with 3 men in midfield, either a 4231 or a 433.

More often than not a team playing 442 will struggle for control of the midfield against these formations, and it forces them to play very defensively.

There's also the matter of traditonal wingers not being as common. We don't have the players to play a 442 any more IMO. Martial / Mkhitaryan / Jesse / Memphis etc. would are more wide forwards / inverted wingers, and would struggle in a 442.

Yeah thats a fair point. I guess in some teams with the right players it works though. Valencia and Young are perfect wide-midfielders for this formation though. But im afraid we are 3 years too late

This could easily fit into part of my point on pampered players. 4-4-2 is a classic and the game seems to be based round fancy formations. 4-4-2, get stuck in, score goals. I remember when we would say "you score 3 and we'll score 4". We were all about the ruthlessness. Don't worry about how many the other have/will score, just go out and score more! 4-4-2 - Everyone needs to work hard, some of these other formations let players have freedom to do what they want and for some players lately it seems to be "i'll do fuck allcause i might get away with it"
