I think everyone would agree that we are not where we want to be right now. Many people are inevitably questioning the manager, the players, the strategy, everything is up for scrutiny.
Cutting through the anxiety however, the central issue seems to be the fact that we have not been able to deploy our resources usefully. In some positions we have a glut of players, in others we don't have enough experience.
Given these limitations, I think that the 5-3-2 can be a good option for Mourinho to explore. Here's why.
Defensive lapses: Eric Bailey and Smalling are both very good defenders. They are however, not great organisers. Daley Blind on the other hand, is great at organization and is a fairly good center back. With Blind holding the ball and dictating play at the back, I feel Bailey and Smalling can be more effectively utilised.
Attacking down the flanks: Let's face it, we don't have quality wingers. Luke Shaw and Valencia are however quite an effective option as attacking full backs. Having three central defenders frees them up, alleviating their defensive responsibilities somewhat, though they both must make the efforts to track back.
Pogba and the midfield: In my opinion, the number 10 role is best suited to Pogba, allowing him to get up front and join the attack. As long as he is flanked by two engines who can overlap, Pogba can do wonders. In my opinion, Pogba in the central role, flanked by Mata and Herrera, or possibly even Fellaini or Carrick, would help get the best out of Pogba.
Attack: I know that Ibra is used to being the lone attacker, but his lack of pace in front of a slow midfield slows down the entire attack. I think Ibra should be paired up with Rashford up front. Ibra's ball holding gameplay coupled with Rashford's pace would be a deadly combination up front. I feel like we are forcibly converting strikers to wingers and that is not working well. Rashford and Martial can be swapped to partner with Ibra.
Now of course, this leaves he question of Rooney. I love the guy, he's a club legend, but it may be time for him to play a lesser role now. Maybe as an inspiring sub in midfield when leadership is needed. He should definitely be around, mentoring the younger players, but maybe as a sub.
Well, there you have it. Let me know what you all think. Maybe you won't agree with it, but it comes from a place that is all red, all the way through
