You seem to rant about a player being bigger than the club but finish your rant by suggesting Pogba take over from Rooney as the talisman. Bit conflicting unless I've misunderstood.

Also, saying Mourinho is playing Rooney because he doesn't want to lose his job? You know it's been 5 games right?

His point is that Rooney is no longer the player he was and is only getting in the team because of his past reputation. Pogba should rightly be taking over Rooney because he's the 23 year old $100m player that should be central to the success of the team over the next 10 years. It's time to move on from Rooney.

Being the face of the club /= Being bigger than the club. Pogba can be the main man in marketing and shirt sales etc. for Manchester United without being "bigger than the club". SAF managed to keep that balance pretty well, and I hope Mourinho can manage too.

I think it's strange that despite everything ferguson did to hold on to Rooney on more than one occasion is being forgotten. Yeah he was dropped a few times but he was always one of SAF's main guys. Rooney is a living legend. No argument. And that's why he keeps getting played, because even when he plays poorly, he'll still get an assist or change a game. The last three games have been piss poor and that's everyone, no just Rooney. Should he be dropped for a while? Yes. Should he be cast aside and sent out into the wilderness like social pariah? No. he isn't playing well, but it's not his fault he gets played, have a go at the managers for not dropping him.

I really don't think Rooney should be played just because 1. He's a club legend and 2. Gets an assist from time to time. He's causing all sorts of problems on the pitch due to his lack of pace, misplaced passess etc.

Everyone agrees with this, but it's not his fault for being picked. It's the manager's.

Another Rooney post zzzzzzzzzzz

Yes he should be dropped for a few weeks, but he's being made a scapegoat for poor performances from the whole team. Prior to the international break he was playing okay and was creating chances. Some fans want him out of the squad and I think that's stupid.

If we believe the story that Mourinho lost the dressingroom at Chelsea then it could be likely that he doesn't want to drop Rooney as he's captain and apparently one of the most likeable People in the dressingroom out of fear of the same thing happening here. Though i'm sure that the likes of Pogba, Zlatan etc aren't very happy With Rooney starting every game..

then it could be likely that he doesn't want to drop Rooney as he's captain and apparently one of the most likeable People in the dressingroom out of fear of the same thing happening here.

Then he can repeat his time at Chelsea and LVG's time with us by being sacked for his insistence on licking Rooney's arse. Jose isn't stupid and he isn't a pussy. If he's playing Rooney it's because he A) thinks he's the best option, B) it's made very clear to Mou from higher up he has to play or C) is letting Rooney hang himself with the noose, before he drops him to unanimous support.

Not because he's afraid of losing the dressing room. One thing Mou has never been afraid to do.

I think that's largely the reason. Perhaps the worst decision LVG made was making Rooney captain because apparently he does the off field part of that job amazingly well. The downside of that is the situation we are on now, in that dropping him potentially causes major dressing room issues. If you look when Fergie felt a popular player was about to be past their usefulness he was ruthless and shipped them out immediately so they couldn't be a problem.

And Fergie seemed to see Rooneys importance waning. It seems he saw that the move was away from 2 Strikers where Rooney excelled as the deeper of the two to a 1 Striker setup where Rooneys qualities don't really suit (look at England in major tournments where he nearly always ended up playing as a lone striker and was ineffective) and that he didn't really have the game for any other role (in the formations we have been playing his qualities suit one of the 'winger' roles most as it allows for his long range passing to be used but even that's not ideal) and of Fergie had stayed on I feel Rooney was off. And at that point he still had suitors who could offer him an attractive package, I suspect China is the only place that could financially tempt him but as he is still playing for England and I don't see his family wanting to move to China (Colleen always seems really close to her family) I doubt he would take such an offer so now we are left with a player who has to play or potentially you get a dressing room split

"No player bigger than the club" mantra was broken when Rooney and his agent basically blackmailed Fergie for a new contract back in 2010., I believe. Ferguson knew that, but he had no choice. It would have been a great gamble to sell your best player to your biggest rival. Not to mention the fans would go berserk. From that point it was a cakewalk for Rooney. He knew he'd get away with anything.

[–]ArbitraryTroy 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I've always thought of that as meaning "no player is more popular than the club." Beckham was so famous a person who had never even heard of Manchester United knew who Beckham was. That's not the case for Rooney.

I've never before seen a club legend disrespected as badly as this before. I believe he needs to be dropped but aside from coming along week in week out and trying his best, the man has done nothing wrong.

It's nobody's fault but Mourinho's that our worst player is be started in the most important attacking position on the pitch.
