[Discussion] Tactics and playing style against Northampton (self.reddevils)

The pessimist in me thinks it'll be a hard game as Northampton will sit back and soak up the pressure and we'll find it difficult to break them down.

Here's me 11 (4-3-3): Romero - Shaw, Blind, Smalling, Darmian - Schneiderlin/Carrick, Herrera, Pogba - Memphis, Rashford , Young.

I think Zlatan needs a rest, and even though a cup game against League 1 opposition will be appropriate to rest Pogba, I don't see it happening after 3 defeats in a row.

I want the front three to make runs beyond Northampton's defense to stretch play instead of just getting the ball to feet and recycling position and the midfield to make quick incisive passes.

Is that too much to ask for considering the money we've spent, the size of the club and the opposition we'll be playing?

Few who deserve game time based on our performances this past three games are Carrick, herrera and schneiderlien in the middle along with romero/Johnstone darmian young and Jones.

Shaw seems to be injured so maybe young gets left back. Bench pogba. He needs to be away from the constant criticism he gets.

There is something seriously wrong, if we struggle and soak up pressure against a League One team that has conceded eight goals in eight matches, and they currently sit in 11th position in the League One table.

Here's me 11 (4-3-3): Romero - Shaw, Blind, Smalling, Darmian - Schneiderlin/Carrick, Herrera, Pogba - Memphis, Rashford , Young.

There are rumors of Shaw having a potential groin injury, so I think we should rest him. So here is my lineup:

I know there is, but something about this game reminds me about the time we played Yeovil away in Van Gaal's first season. It seems like an easy game, but we also have to remember that every team ups their mettle against Man United.

Yup. That's exactly my thinking. Though I don't think Lingard is going to get game time any time soon.

I think we should play our first team, de gea and all - and use the match as practice to work on tactics and confidence.

That's not going to happen. And even if we win with our "B" team, confidence will generally spread in the dressing room.
