A mantra that the club kept sacred for the entirety of Ferguson's tenure. It seems that in these days that has all been forgotten. The club has allowed Rooney to become more than just the face of the club, but bigger than Manchester United itself. It seems obvious that someone is pulling the strings to allow Rooney to keep playing. Mourinho is not blind, he's seeing the exact same as us. Rooney is dreadful, and has been for a long time. So why does he keep playing?
There's no doubt that Rooney has been the face of Manchester United for a long time. And I think Mourinho is fearful of removing the club's talisman from the starting spot. As if the board keeps insisting that he must play. I've always perceived Mourinho as a coach who doesn't give two flying fucks about the board's opinion, but it seems in this case, he's actually worried about losing this job if he doesn't obey their commands.
Hopefully, Sunday's game was the end of Rooney's era. There's no longer any doubt he's past it. It's not a drop of form, it' not a bad stretch of games. It's every. single. game. And it's time the club realizes that and starts looking for another leader.
We now have a new face in the club, Paul Pogba. It's time Rooney passes the torch and fucks off to China.
