I think you bring up an interesting point about how many of our players are best with the ball at their feet. I think something we miss a lot as well is movement off the ball. I think we are too static when one of our players has the ball. But before we look at all of this I think we need to address the midfield, because without a midfield that can control the game, the forwards are sort of isolated from the defense and we'll have to rely on balls into Fellaini/Zlatan to advance the ball into the attacking third.

Yes I believe the midfield plays a part, I just didn't want the post to go any longer. Michael Carrick is the best player we have. I say this because he controls the game, and everyone else looks a lot better when he plays. I think he will be key again this season. That said, I think our transfer policy is another problem. We signed players who made the headlines last season but it's like we forget about the people who made it possible. Pogba for example, benefitted from marchisio/pirlo/Khedira. We need to sign those kinds of players since Carrick is getting old.

I agree with you in that I'd love to see Carrick in the midfield. I think he is really the only player in the squad who can control the tempo and distribute well from deep. I think you're right that it would be great to sign someone like the players that you've named, but I don't know who we could sign that would be available.

Yeah, the best players are already taken like busquets or Modric. Then again Carrick wasn't world famous when we signed him, so hopefully there are these kinds of players playing for teams below us. Lets hope our scouts are doing their jobs.

Haha, agreed. I think Kante would have been a good fit in the midfield to free up Pogba and distribute pretty well. I think there was a report of us trying to sign him but he turned us down for Chelsea. Hopefully we'll see some more players in that role become available to replace Carrick eventually.

The issue with out transfer policy is we don't have an underlying system for which we base our transfers. Under SAF we didn't have to worry about that because he wasn't leaving anytime soon and he knew what he needed and for how long. More importantly, SAF had the uncanny ability to make use of players in any way he found the most useful.

Since SAF we tried to continue that trend with Moyes and he bought players he needed.

When LVG came in, I believe we were attempting to change is this trend. We had plans to institute a new system and players would be recruited for the future towards the continuity of a particular style of play and system. In the last 2 years under LVG we've recruited based on profiles that fit a style of play. Now again that's been scrapped in favor of Mourinho to being immediate success. These players are not quite fit for Mourinho's style of play hence some of the issues we might be facing.

What I find interesting about Mourinho though is that when he took over Chelsea a second time, he cleaned house immediately and brought in his own style of players. Why hasn't he done that now if the current crop of players aren't what he needs ?

The club needs to settle on something fast otherwise we'll continue to have these short term coaches who need several transfer windows to get players they'll need for whatever playing style they desire.
