Blind is by far a better footballer and he helps with passing the ball around and sometimes forward better than Smalling, But Smalling is a better CB defensively. He looked rusty during the Watford game, but I'm sure he'll be back to his best after a good run of games. I think Blind would be a much better Midfielder then Fellaini, and we don't have to worry about him losing headers with Bailly and Smalling behind him.

I prefer Blind. I think there's too much emphasis on 'physicality' by the media. Sure, now and again he'll be found out, but all players makes mistakes. Smalling's overall positioning is terrible, but most of the time he makes up for it by his strength and speed. However, at a big club you need to be able to do more than just defending, and Smalling is just too limited with the ball at his feet for my liking.

I'd prefer if Mourinho uses the two of them together, just like last season. The defensive record last season was the Premier League's best (tied with Tottenham), and I think the Blind/Smalling partnership played a part in making that record. Why not stick with what worked well last season, instead of trying to change things up by adding Bailly? Obviously, if either one of Blind or Smalling don't perform, give Bailly a chance. However, I'd rather use the Blind/Smalling pairing for now, since it is a proven partnership.

Is Bailly given a free pass? He has been just as poor as Smalling was for 3 games straight.

I think Blind should start but I wouldn't say it's between Blind and Smalling. Bailly definitely has to fight for his place as well. Blind could probably do a good job in midfield as well but I don't know how he is when he's pressured which will be more common in the middle. Carrick is also a good shout in midfield and would let us play both Smalling and Bailly. We definitely need one player that can sit back and play passes forward and quickly transition the attack from the defense to the attack.

I prefer a back 2 of smalling/bailly with blind CDM
