in the last few frames you can see that the arm itself is fucked. It's been lacerated and then twisted rapidly, tearing up the length of the arm even though he was bitten slightly above the wrist.

It's possible that the arm could be repaired but I highly doubt he'd retain normal function.

For those of you who didnt watch Steve Irwin growing up, the difference between the guy in this gif and in OP's gif: blue guy touched the crocodile's teeth. From what I remember, their teeth are extremely sensitive. When they have their mouths open like that, touching their teeth even slightly will trigger the involuntary physiological response to clamp down and begin what is known as the death roll. They don't attack just because they feel like it, like gorillas do with children, it's completely involuntary. That's why red guy is able to confidently stick his hand in the crocodile's mouth. He knows he is safe as long as he doesn't touch its teeth.

From my understanding, the crocodile will only react when something touches the inside of his mouth. So so long as he stops his hand from hitting the croc's mouth in the way out, the crocodile won't react.

Incorrect. The way it works is you insert hand into the crocodile's mouth, without making any contact and retract your hand in a zap. There are 2 points of logic here -

  • Your hand is in the mouth for like 2 seconds maybe; such a short time means less probability of a fuck up or alerting the croc itself

  • It helps that the crocodile's eyes are on top of it's head. That means it can't see your hand going into it's mouth.

Where most people fuck up is on the way out. Even a tiny contact and you can brace yourself for a death roll. Even a drop of sweat. Contact inside mouth = crocodile WILL react.

I dunno what's happening in this case, but my guess is it's a really well-trained and recently fed crocodile. Hence, the calmness. Still a little uncanny though.
