Did anyone else feel the radio was lacking in Fallout 4?

There was a post a while back on this subreddit that explained why lots of the Fallout 3 songs were reused and there weren't as many new songs added as people were expecting.

I wish they didn't do the quest to help Travis. Firstly, I prefer Travis' lines before Confidence Man, so i just avoided this quest completely in my second play through (although i realize this is more a matter of preference), but more importantly, they had to record two whole sets of lines for the one radio station, where they could have recorded just one set of lines, but with more stories/news/jokes/etc. There's so much more repetition this way, and it's not as if there's another radio station with a presenter we can listen to.

I liked all the songs in Fallout 4 pretty much. Travis was also probably the funniest part of the game at large.

There was a point some video review made about Travis though that I think I agree with. While he was funny, it was an odd choice to set the tone of the game with that.

I remember my first impression when I heard Travis was that maybe he was being held against his will and being forced to DJ for some Fallout-y reason which would explain the nervousness. I imagined finally meeting him and having the chance to free/kill/enslave/whatever. But nah, just a dude sitting in a room.

The number of returning songs is disappointing. I didn't have a lot of love for Three Dog, found him pretty irritating and generic, but Travis might be worse. I like FO4 a lot, but I'll say playing without mods the first time, I listened to the radio a LOT less than in 3 or NV.

I know not everyone can use mods, but for those who can, GET ATOMIC RADIO. A fair amount of music, great skits and lore friendly ads. Also consider More Where That Came From, Elvani's Track Pack, and Upbeat Classical Music.

Neither of the games compare to Radio New Vegas IMO. Mr New Vegas was a legend, most of the songs are pretty enjoyable to listen to over and over again (except fucking Johnny Guitar)

The problem is that Inon Zurs ambient soundtrack is much better to listen to. Even the radio with the classical pieces comes off better than the Diamond City radio station.

Travis just has barely anything interesting or funny to say, no matter before or after his quest. Some of the new songs are good though.

I wouldn't have mind when you find records of these F3 songs scattered around the commonwealth and you can bring it to Travis as a unlockable for his radio. But right away from the start it was kinda off putting to me (like when ambient music from F1/F2 plays in Fallout New Vegas).

It really pissed me off that they recycled songs from FO3. Recycled ambient music I can live with, because the FO1 and FO2 ambient music was great, but recycling FO3 radio songs even though there are plenty suitable songs available is just bogus.

I would've liked it a whole lot more if most of FO3's songs weren't repeated.

I like Travis, but I have to admit, he was far more amusing to listen to before Confidence Man. His tone after Confidence Man isn't bad by any means, but it lacks the same kind of distinction that the previous radio hosts had. It'd also help if they just had more songs, though.

I don't remember ever hearing Train Train until after I beat the main quest line. I love that song.

Also, I'd catch glimpses of stations in the pip boy that was just a bunch of static.

I always find the best way to enjoy audio/soundtrack in Fallout is to listen to the ambient, and let the songs just be heard on the radios scattered throughout the Wasteland. Makes things a lot more atmospheric that way. In that regard, Fallout 4 did pretty well since the ambient was pretty good and it was nice occasionally hearing nostalgiac Fallout 3 songs wandering into Diamond City. But I can imagine the re-use would be really annoying if you constantly had the radio on.

I'm kind of in the minority, in that I thought Three Dog was kind of obnoxious. Even in my most lawful of playthroughs, killing him was a high priority. Travis was an.... interesting direction to take the DJ in this game. Once you did Confidence Man he definitely improved though.

In regards to the music, I think Bethesda was going for a nostalgia factor that kind of fell on its face. The reaction they wanted was, "Wow! I remember these songs from Fallout 3. This really takes me back. :)" An example of this done right was in the Dragonborn DLC for Skyrim. When you made it to Solstheim and heard The Road Most Travelled, a piece of iconic music from Morrowind. When I first heard I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire for the first time in Fallout 4, my reaction was more, "Great. I get to listen to this song another ten thousand god damn times."

I actually really enjoyed diamond city radio, but I wish there would have been 3 times the number of songs there are, when you hear multiple times the same song in one play session it's meh. And the other radios aren't worth jack

I liked Diamond City Radio's music selection, but I just don't like Travis (even after his quest). I also don't like raider radio at all, it fits with the raider theme but there is just sooooo much repetition. I ended up downloading a mod that adds several radio stations to the game and all of these stations have better radio presenters than the vanilla game.

What I don't like is that it's quite a bit harder to hear character dialogue with your radio on. In Fallout 3 & NV I more or less had the radio on the whole time. For Fallout 4 I've maybe had it on for 3 hours despite logging almost 40 days of play time.

The radio has always been lacking in Fallout. I really hoped they would make an effort with the radio. Even a fraction of the radio variety in any of the GTA games would have made me very happy.

No actually, I thought it was better in FO4. Three Dog was too preachy, I had him do the Shady Sands Shuffle more than once. I liked nervous Travis, he went downhill after the SS helped him. YMMV.

I though it was fine, but I do think it would have been better to have two (non-classical) stations with the music divided between them. This would allow you to listen to something else if you weren't in the mood for the song on the other station. This also could have allowed two very different radio hosts and maybe a questline involving them competing.

Three Dog was no doubt a more intriguing host. At the time 3 released, having a radio station that develops organically based on the choices the character made was refreshing. I remember in one save file I capped Three Dog as soon as I met him to steal the bandana, only for some crabby old woman to hop on the mic and start bashing me lol

I honestly have really come to love just listening to the ost as I do stuff in game. My favourite is the Far Harbor ost; it feels very fitting.

I just switched it off after 3-4 hours into the game and enjoyed the ambient music and sound effects. Checked the song list, checked Travis' comments, don't think I missed anything

Well getting songs is hard, they have to be close to 50's era, about a nuclear bomb, end of the world, or something along those lines, plus getting licenses for those songs is expensive. At least we have mods that add radio stations.

If you are into, and able to mod, I would suggest Old World Tunes, I hated the vanilla radio, usually only kept it on the classical station, radio freedom, or silence. But OWT has a great selection, and the host is fun to listen to. In a perfect world it wouldn't be a mod, it would've just been the vanilla experience

Not enough unknown, new and specifically commonwealth/post bomb songs. Pretty sure humans would keep making music. There would be New Bards walking everywhere.

Eh, I really loved Classical Radio and they did a good job with selecting a wide-ish variety of fine pieces. Of course, I wish there'd been more (I would take entire symphonies in a heartbeat) but I'm happy with what I got.

No more than any other Fallout game. I mean if you're gonna put several hundred hours into a game, be prepared to hear the same song a few times. Even when you listen to a radio station in real life....there's a theme to any given radio station weather it be rock and roll, top 40, classic, jazz....And within those themes there's really only a few dozen songs that are good enough that lots of people want to hear them. With Fallout, that theme is 50's and 60's, except if you havent noticed, all these songs have something to do with either radiation or surviving or guns or violence or something like that, which limits the choices even more.

I think three dog was the best. Travis wasn't that good, but i really liked red eye from nuka world.

The new songs they added in fallout 4 were great.For me it was a great mix between the old songs and the new songs.

I felt like the default radio station played the same stuff over and over again. I was damn near 20 hours in before hearing either "Wanderer" or "Atom Bomb Baby" even one time.

I kind of missed a radio station like Enclave radio with a character like president Eden. Even GNR was better than all radio stations in F4.

Yeah, I never, ever play the radio.

Cause it's bad.
Cause the ambient soundtrack I think is the best of any fallout game since 2! It's so good, and I think it took some risks. They could have played it safe, but instead they went in a really unique direction.

So I think the radio in Fallout is the worst of the new games, while the ambient music is the best of the new games!
