I went to Shetland summer 10' with a friend who is from the islands and I had a blast, everyone I met was friendly.

The islands are fairly wealthy as a lot of their residents work on / or for oil rigs nearby, which (for the locals), makes the import prices easier to bare, it also makes their politics and attitude a little different from the way the rest of Scotland thinks.

From my personal experience they seem like they'd be welcoming to foreigners, I remember their youth hostels being a good place to go get advice / meet people etc.

Also try and avoid the boat from Aberdeen if you can and fly over instead, the seas can be very rough round there.

I enjoyed the ferries! Get a bit of sea spray in the face, it's quite invigorating!

Well, since you were with a local, of course they were friendly to you. They might not be so friendly to someone like me who comes in from outside alone.

In my experience most places don't care unless you're a cunt, there isn't even a language barrier.

I'm an Englishman whose been living in Aberdeen for 8 years now and visits the Shetland islands at least twice a year, due to friends living there. Granted I've been living in this country a while, but if Scots can be friendly with an Englishman rest assured they'll accept you fine. Lovely people there. Friendly, warm and chatty. You mention being a loner, which may make you seem stand off-ish and odd, but given time and effort folks'll warm to ya. The islands are cold, windy and the North Sea is rough going, so dress for weather appropriately. Rentable housing there I understand to be fairly average costs as the UK goes (~£300 rent per person. Typically more if you're renting a place alone.) and electricity/gas costs will be a fair bit higher, due to heating though the insulation there tends to be damn good. The locals are split into folks who are wealthy due o nearby oil, arable farmers and fishermen, amongst a few other professions. In my experience everyone is down to Earth.

How far would $1000 a month in a US pension take you? I'd like to travel to the UK all over and then parts of Europe and Egypt on that much per month coming in...

£700 would get you a week in a hotel Ina tourist area.

6 months on a standard visitor visa - but you can't work, even digitally, on a tourist visa so you'll need a sizeable budget.

Can I go with you?

I wouldn't be able to go until next summer, but I'd like to stay for at least 6 months to do some genealogy study

How do you plan on staying past the 90 days allowed on your US passport? For stays longer than 90 days, you'll need to qualify for some sort of visa. I think you're getting a bit ahead of yourself asking about cost of living or friendliness of the locals. If you're set on staying for longer than 3 months at a time, you first need to figure out how you might qualify for a visa.

Edit: Nevermind. See correction below. You can stay up to 6 months on a standard tourist visa (automatic with a US passport), but after that you'll need to leave.

Isn't the UK 180 days?

Oh, I'm stupid. It does appear to be 6 months for the UK.
