FIRST HALF UPDATES:

0' The teams are out. United kick off in red, Watford in yellow.

5' United with a good start so far but the only shot of the game has come from a Smalling header from a United free kick but it was wide of the mark.

10' WATFORD COME CLOSE! Watford swing a free kick in deep and Prodl gets on the end of it unmarked at the back post and his header across goal is inches away from Deeney who was trying to tap it in as it came back across goal.

12' What a shitshow! There's a high lofted ball from deep that De Gea and Smalling both attempt to go for and it's spilt to Ighalo but his shot at an open goal is wide.

16' De Gea is forced into a spectacular save! Janmaat swings in a very good ball and Deeney beats Valencia with ease but his powerful header is saved well by De Gea. We really need to get our shit together.

20' United calm play down a bit and the latest attack ends in a Rashford cross that's straight into Gomes' hands.

21' United counter quickly and Rashford again is causing problems with his low cross to the far post resulting in Ibra hitting the side-netting.

26' Martial is down after he goes up and heads Janmaat's head. He's currently getting medical attention and he might need to be substituted. Janmaat is also down and receiving attention.

30' POGBA SMACKS THE CROSSBAR! He picked the ball up about 25 yards out, took a touch and then whacked it against the bar with such power that it came back out of the box to the edge of the D.

33' WATFORD GOAL Martial's tackled hard at the left back position as he tried to dribble the ball out of danger but the ball is then played to the edge of the box by Janmaat and Capoue smacks the ball home.

36' MANCHESTER UNITED SUBSTITUTION Young ON || Martial OFF

37' Martial could not continue after both the collision with Janmaat and the tackle that led to the goal.

39' Shaw surges into the box and beats his man but his shot t goal is blocked behind for a corner.

43' Ibrahimovic has been through multiple times now from various mistakes in the Watford defence but he hasn't been able to make the most of his chances.

44' Holebas takes a free kick that curls around the wall but De Gea gathers well even after seeing it late.

    Frustrating half so far, with defensive issues allowing Watford to threaten, while we have been very slow to get going with our own attacks.

    • Much of our defensive issues have come from our back four being too deep instead of squeezing the pitch. Has improved somewhat as the half has progressed, but at times we're still needlessly giving up territory for Watford to play the long ball into Ighalo and Deeney. Any clearances we're forced into from deeper is also giving Holebas a chance to throw one in from wide, effectively a free kick from out wide when near the corner flag.

    • We need to keep playing it up the pitch quickly where possible, as Watford have been quick themselves to get numbers back and pack the midfield, with Pereyra, Capoue and Behrami also being quick to support out wide. We haven't completely lost control of the midfield, with the physicality we possess through the middle part of the reason, but it's becoming increasingly harder to play the ball through this part of the pitch due to the sheer numbers between our midfield players and the goal. a couple of balls played long to Ibrahimovic to lay off has had potential, but Rooney, who would be expected to be closest to the knockdown, has often been too deep to latch onto the ball. We have looked a threat on the break when our wingers have run at Holebas and Janmaat one-on-one (and even Britos and Cathcart if we catch Watford up the pitch). A quicker switch of play or even feeding the ball to them early will provide a dangerous outlet for us from wide, around the crowded central area.

    • We've also gotten opportunities from out wide when Valencia and Shaw have gotten the ball just ahead of the wing backs, who have been forced into the problem of keeping with Martial (and now Young) and Rashford, or pushing on to close the man on the ball and leave our wingers free. We need to continue utilising our full backs in this manner as we look to break down Watford - at the very least, it can drag their midfielders to close, or potentially centre backs dragged to our wingers, opening up other areas for a run from midfield. The crosses themselves have lacked quality so far, most of the time not being played deep enough into the danger areas behind the defensive line, or simply stalled for too long, allowing the cross to be closed down or Watford's defensive line to drop even deeper and goal-side to our players.

    It's become so obvious how to play against United, it's so easy that even the small teams can do it. Press the player who receives the ball, just don't give him too much space, and that's it. That's fucking it. It used to be you press up against Man United, they played one-two, they created space, they played the ball for a runner behind the defence's back and they scored. And then you didn't press against Man United anymore. The fear is gone, teams know this game play will bother us. Watford is playing the exact same game that Feyenoord played on Thursday.
