Can Rooney play CM next to Pogba? (self.reddevils)

I'm curious, as someone who isn't familiar with a 4-3-3 formation, as I've only studied 4-4-2 and 4-2-3-1, does Rooney have what it takes to play next to Pogba?

I know that, from watching Real, Modric is the advancing MF(Pogba) who links the mids and forwards, while Kroos plays a more deep playmaking role with Casper protecting the back four.

I believe that Pogba and Blind would work well for the team we have, but is Fellaini the best option for the Casper role? Could Rooney not play there as well?

I'm asking, and this is not a critic of tactics, but I was wondering if there was a way to get our best players on the pitch at once in a 4-3-3.

The same Rooney that ran down 2/3rds of the pitch to head the ball off the line against Everton?

After that game, pundits and football fans alike were saying his performance was like that of Pirlo, he was damn impressive then

Now, I'm not saying Rooney is Pirlo, but as a CDM, I don't think he'd be so bad.

Aside maybe tackles..... that's quite important I guess.

Carrick is the one, we're done here, Rooney isn't as bad as what people would like to believe.

I've said this before and I say it again, Rooney should be played next to Pogba with a proper DM behind them in a 4-3-3. That's literally the only position Rooney can thrive in our team right now. He gets time in the middle and doesn't have to make too many runs as Pogba would be doing that. Rooney can receive the ball from the DM and make decisions from that point but he'll be in a lot more space than he would as a #10.

yeah and we have seen this before for the most part rooneys passing is sideways and backwards we need a hell of a DM to cover Rooney and Pogbas positional awareness and lack of defending

Rooney defends. He covers the pitch. He makes tackles. Carrick is a good enough DM to handle those responsibilities. And how about all those cross field passes from Rooney last season ? Being paired with Pogba means he just needs to support Pogbas runs etc. collect the ball, wait for Pogba to move pass to him or find one of the wingers. It's far less work than where he's currently being deployed as a #10. If he can't play CM then he should be nowhere further up the pitch

He coverrs the pitch but in terms of defending and tracking back he has moments which are pure instinct or are last ditch like the bit of defending against Everton in the Fa Cup. Playing nothing but balls wide to our wingbacks isnt good for Pogba who can move the ball further up the pitch a hell of alot easier. Carricks defensive game is almost non existent and hes too much of a liability defensively pairing him with Pogba wouldnt work imo .

If Pogba can move the ball why does Rooney need to ping balls to the wing? That'll make his job even easier. Like I said, all he'll need to do is pass the ball to Pogba who shouldnt be too far from him.

I think you're mistaken about Carrick. He's ability to read the game is comparable to Blinds. He's great cover for the back 4 and since he'll never move from there, he won't need to cover much ground.

However you want to slice this, the only way to keep Rooney in the team is what I've just suggested. If Rooney doesn't speed up his play at #10 and start making some creative passes to let out our attack, we'll struggle until the end of the season.

Yeah but for a while Carrick has looked off the pace and his passing hasn't been what it was. Rooney just doesn't have the quality for CM or AM anymore

I think he can play RCM but not CDM if that's what you're suggesting, alot of his joy comes from the right flank. I have no problem with playing 4231 as things are though

He could. Doesn't mean he should. Anderson is far more superior midfielder.
