So I'm sat in my car outside the local DIY shop, listening to some tunes and reading my book waiting for a friend to get a load of supplies we need for a project (we're repairing a load of old replica guns for airsoft {UK replica is basically best we can get!}).
Their is an admittedly nice white Merc parked nearby (badly I might add).
A man and woman walk by. They look like the typical new-rich young yuppie type. All well so far. Then the woman stops and begins guiding the man around the car. I turn my music down and she is making comments about how nice a vehicle it is, wondering what kind of payment plans are available etc. Here is the kicker - she straight turns to the guy and asks him if he could afford one because she'd 'love to be with a man with a car like that'. You could see the discomfort on his face.
The guy is dressed like a catwalk model, and is obviously uncomfortable with it. It struck me that this guy was basically living a lie just for some totty. She was a good looking person but you could tell her attitude stunk.
All I could think is how happy I am in life right now. How I've got everything I ever wanted which was never much, and here is this guy jumping through all the hoops society asks of him. And he's miserable for it. He looked so downcast. Admittedly I don't know his story and maybe something happened recently in his life and it isn't his partner that is the issue...but God it seemed like she was a big part of it :p.
Happy ending to this tale - my comrade returned with his gear, and we're now sat happily in his garage throwing back a few brews listening to old punk albums fixing up these guns for an awesome airsoft road-trip we have planned in a few weeks time.
Here's to being a man! Cheers!
