One of the greatest games ever made, gonna pick up the RE1 remake and RE5 sometime in the future. Maybe just my opinion but RE5 gets way too much hate then it deserves. Obviously its not on RE4's level, but it's a hell of a lot better then RE6...

I played and enjoyed RE5 from start to finish in co-op with a good friend/roommate at the time. I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much solo, but it's a great co-op experience.

That said, RE4 is miles better, one of the greatest games of all time. Even though it isn't co-op, a couple friends and I played through it together just by passing the controller around while the other two watched. 10/10 gaming experience (I've since played the whole thing by myself, but that first playthrough as a group was just amazing).

Me and my housemate at University did the exact same thing! We collected all of the Resident Evils on the Gamecube (I still have them!) and would stay up all night going through them. Amazing that a 100% singleplayer game could be played in a pair/group.

I don't think there's anything else out there like them. I love these games.

I played the first Resident Evil this way back in the day, and I think that's one of the reasons I have such fond memories of that game. Definitely great games to play with friends.

I loved RE5, it even had splitscreen.

The first few levels of RE5 are great.

The temple levels really annoy me in RE5. Rest of the game is great.

RE 5 really does get too much hate. While it may not be as good as some other RE titles it was one awesome co-op game.

The levels weren't so memorable is the only thing about RE5, yeah maybe you can remember them but not in a RE4 way but more of "oh its this part" way. I replayed 6 and 5 before 4 and its just miles better than both.

The Lost In Nightmares DLC for RE5 was an awesome throw back with a updated system that I wish they used for RE6.

Yeah that was really cool. I never heard of it until I played the rerelease a few weeks ago and it was dripping with nostalgia.

RE5 was on sale a couple of weeks ago for really cheap.

[–]Threw_it_to_ground 0ポイント1ポイント  (4子コメント)

It's on sale now with co-op sale.

It's 15.99 though, I got it for 5 or 6 dollars.

[–]Threw_it_to_ground 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

Oh was it that cheap? Damn, should have grabbed it.

If you have GCU at Best Buy, you should be able to get it for $11. (Assuming you're US)

Question: I never played RE4 when it first came out, or on re-release. Is it worth picking up the hd remastered version for ps4 and playing through? Does the gameplay still hold up years later? I've only heard good things about the game, but I'm curious how well it meshes with modern sensibilities.

It really is tons of fun. I haven't played the remastered version but the 360 one I did play was great. Just like RE4 but with co op basically. Everyone agrees RE4 is better cause it broke the mold of the genre at the time and was hugely significant but in it's own right RE5 was awesome and IMO a worthy sequel

Played it on Wii. Still a really good game on that console.

The wii mote aiming brought that game to a whole new level. So satisfying to pull off head shots with the control!

I still consider it the best version. It also made quick time events a bit different since u could also shake it and knifing

I played it in GCN, Wii, and then 360. The Wiimote made the Wii version by far the easiest, largely because it was the only version where you could aim before pulling up your sights.

its near impossible for me to go back after playing it on the wii, graphics be damned that controller was made for that game.

That was actually the definitive version at that time

It's the only game I kept for my wii. I really want to get it now that it's on PS4 but I don't think it can live up to the experience on the wii with the perfect controls.

If you a similar vibe in movie form check out a movie that inspired parts of it.

Dagon.

I won't spoil it for you but suffice to say it has some stuff that is very similar to the game and came out eariler. Not a direct inspiration but some pieces show up.

I'm a simple man. I see a Dagon reference, I upvote.

But really, it is a good movie that would probably appeal to fans of Resident Evil. Hope this isn't a spoiler to say it's inspired by the Lovecraft mythos, and it's one of the few movies to attempt it, and one of fewer still that get right.

Can it be a spoiler to state that a movie is inspired by the Lovecraft mythos when it's named the same as the story it was inspired by? I think you're fairly safe.

Actually where it gets weird is that Dagon the film is a loose adaptation of the story Shadow Over Insmouth and is only tangentially related to Dagon.

it gets weird is that Dagon the film is a loose adaptation of the story Shadow Over Insmouth

SOLD, will be watching this weekend. Ever since I heard the story I thought "WHY IS THIS NOT A MOVIE?"

One of my favourite Lovecraft works too.

Very true it was also disturbed me more than any other movie recently. It's campy, it's got the Eerie vibe, and the whole thing is pretty similar in a couple ways. Spoilers for Dagon below

Resident Evil 4 on the Wii is probably the best version of the game. Really nailed the controls with the Wiimote, even though it felt much easier. It's a shame Resi 4 wasn't even remotely scary though, that was the only let down. I found 1, 2 and 3 all pretty scary but 4 was just a bit of dumb fun.

I feel great never having to deal with regenerators and the xenomorph hand again.

[–]Threw_it_to_ground 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

I thought there were some scary parts. The chainsaw guys and when you're in the house and the zombies are coming in from everywhere. Just a different type of scary I guess.

The dudes that you have to snipe parts of their insides were pretty scary.

I dunno, I mean it got tense but I never felt too scared really...Resident Evil 3 Nemesis had me shitting my pants, that constant sense of dread and terror, but maybe it was because I was younger.

I'm waiting until next month to go through 4-6 again. HALLOWEEN OooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo

RE4 is arguably the best game in the RE series. Fuck everyone who says they ruined the franchise by focusing more on action, just a shame Capcom fucked it up with RE5 and 6.

RE2 is the best by far to me. But I realize this might be an unpopular opinion and I understand how someone could like 4 better.

I don't think it is that unpopular an opinion. RE2 was the best horror title of the series. The original was damn good, but the sequel improved upon so much, especially content wise. I know that many give the nod to Nemesis, but personally i think that Mr X was a much better fit to the series. Horror-wise he was an excellent character.

Overall the game is excellently done and provides tons of replayability. I don't think that I've played any PS1 game more than FFVII but RE2 comes very close in numbers of replays. I would love to have a remastered version of it, I would pay full price.

basically, Mikami and Kamiya are geniuses

No, I'm the one with the unpopular opinion. Code Veronica was the best.

DEAD AIM BRO. Ps2 days. On rails RE is the only way to go.

I even played with the analog stick and no light gun. (it kinda sucked lol)

I understand how someone could like 4 better.

I can't wrap my head around somebody loving RE4 but thinking RE5 was where the franchise went to ruin when it's really just more of RE4 but with coop. People loving RE4 is exactly why they went down the route they did.

But yeah, I think RE2 is the best although Resi remake and Nemesis are so damn good that it's so hard to choose between them.

Nah, re5 has dual stick controls, and is much more open. Both of these factors make it feel considerably less claustrophobic than 4. I think 2 is best, but don't sleep on Code Veronica X!

Maybe it's an unpopular opinion but it does not make it wrong. It's your personal preference And that's cool.

I never owned a PS1 I had to play on my friends system so I never actually got to sit down with 1,2 and 3 and really get into them. I am sure that if I had a PS1 as a kid and I could play these games I would have loved them all equally.

Most older gamers would likely agree with you. Everyone I know thinks RE2 is far superior. I like RE4 but it's really RE in name only imo. Same with RE7 actually.

RE5 is not that bad. RE6 though. That was a shitshow.

Eh not really. It's still very fun to play imo. It's just a different game from the older games in the series. 5 was a hybrid and 6 was full change. I think it's a great action game with good controls and it requires deep enough knowledge.

[–]Threw_it_to_ground 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

I enjoyed Ada's campaign, it was pretty cool to play from different perspectives after experiencing it as another character.

I Based my opinion of RE5 on RE4, one of the biggest reasons I wanted a PS3 and got one was because I wanted to play RE5 so badly. 1) Because it was set in Africa and I am from Africa so it was supposed to be awesome 2) Because I expected RE4 with a new setting and new characters but core gameplay intact.

What I got was nowhere near what I was expecting so perhaps you're right and I am being a little biased but that's my personal opinion, I was so dissapointed.

Great game but as a someone born and raised in Spain I couldn't take the game seriously as the enemies were speaking "mexican" instead of castillian spanish so that kinda like threw me off. People over here got pretty pissed off. Plus the villages look like the game was based on some poor african country (no offense) instead of Spain.

Detras de ti imbeeeesiiiil!!!!

There is a bit of generation shock with this, but it melts away. I'd always wanted to play this legendary game but never had the right machine. First impressions, there was definitely a bit of a stomach drop: Ah, shit. I've made a mistake. These clunky, rotate-on-the-spot controls feel so old. What is the camera stick doing? The world's all dull brown. Some of these assets are like 6k jpegs. I can barely aim this stupid cumbersome Surgeon Simulator gun, yet the whole village is after me at once... oh God, they're spilling through the windows, how am I meant to cope? This is hard as absolute fuck!

Now I play it every night. The balance and mechanics are so good. The strategy, resource management, survival. There's always some new, neatly designed challenge around each corner. Each little zone of the map is devoted to working with the systems you've been given in an interesting way. And it all has so much character. I already want to just beat it so I can start over with the knowledge I've accrued.

First and only game I played through w a girl. Now I am sad.

Never got into it cause I could never get passed that village :(

ditto! chainsaw dudes scared me to death and i put the game back in its case SO fast.

[–]p0rtugalviip0rtugal_VII 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

Don't go for the shotgun then. ;)

You stay outta that house and everything is easy. Get the shotgun after the bell rings and they despawn. That's what I do.

Its super easy to just sprint by everyone, grab the shotgun plus grenade/ammo, go upstairs and get on the roof to the point where everythings coming at you from one direction and you have a chokepoint with a window/ladder to slow things down.

Once you can bunch everything up and get off 2-3 shotty blasts and even a nade its just cleanup time with the pistol/knife.

But for new people unfamiliar its definitely quite a shock to run into a hard area that quick but i loved it, once you beat that area youre prepared for most everything the games gonna throw at you.

Spoiler alert, the middle part of the game is relentless. If you cant survive that this game is not for you. Pretty much like the training boss in Dark Souls

So I beat the Dark Souls 3 first boss on my first try, no problem. I can't get past boss 3.

I think I'm 40% in. Every boss I've beat I had to summon help, the game is so hard

Once you beat it the first time, you'll come back through on NG+ and wipe the floor with all of the bosses...

Besides Nameless King, fuck that guy.

Hmm don't remember Nameless king. I think I only beat it once on ps2 I was a lot younger and terrified at the time haha. Its really nice being surprised left and right again

Whoops... Thought you were still talking about Dark Souls. My fault!

Ha wow, should have recognized thats clearly a DS boss name

I don't know...they should definitely use it if they ever make a Resident Medieval.

I played through the original RE1 and RE2 on the PS, now I've downloaded the remastered version and playing through them again. I think they lost their way towards the end but RE1 & RE2 are just pure gold classics. Mater piece's. They defined the horror genre when it came to games.

Not sure if r/PS4 really cares, but these guys are modding Leon into Sm4sh: https://twitter.com/StardustDev_

I just want to say that the 'tank controls' were perfect. Is Resi1 when a Hunter spotted you... having to turn before you could run away added fear and in-turn excitement.

Cant say I miss the controls, but that was partly because I had no problem with controlling my character. I know people have since coined "tank controls" as a bad thing but it never really bothered me.

Exactly. The controls add to the overall atmosphere of these games. And RE4 perfects it, IMO.

Never got into the series but I'm curious about it. Can someone give me the best and worst parts about it?

It's hard to do a general analysis of the series cause it has a giant difference between RE1~3 and 5~6, with 4 being the middle ground.

1~3 are very strategic and tense, you have to do inventory management, sometimes avoid enemies because you're out of bullets and run for your life and stuff like that. It has tank controls that fans of the new generation complain about, but some fans think they were good for the imersion. Meanwhile, 5~6 are more action oriented and there's basically almost no tense moments anymore, just gore. This greatly split the fanbase between "true horror fans" (1~3) and the new generation fans. 4 is the middle ground because, in mine (and apprently a lot of people's) opinion, it has the perfect balance between survival horror and shooter.

If you want to get a taste of old style RE, you can pick up REmake for the ps4, which various people consider the best game in the series.

Res 1 and 2 were definitely best in the series for me, but it was all new at the time. Even with the pixalation on the ps1 the immersion gripped me. The dogs jumping g through the windows scared the shit out of me lol

Best: games are tense.

Worst: games are tense!

They give me a feeling like no other games do though.

For someone looking to get into the series I recommend three games:

Resident evil 1: hard game. The remake adds content making it longer. It's a scary game.

Resident evil 2: I enjoyed this more than one but it's hard to compare them because 2 begins to explore the actiony part of this series just a tad. 2 was a bit more forgiving than 1 and the pace of this game was just right. I love 2 and I sooo badly want the remake.

Resident evil 4: each of the three I listed are excellent games , but each is displayed in a different frame. Resident evil 4 is again different, much different this time but still has a lot of core mechanics that are Resident Evil. Definitely an action horror game. One of my favorite games of all time.

All three of these are highly recommended. Lots of cool monsters, boss battles are disgusting and challenging. Ambience is terrific , I enjoy the music in these games a lot.

All resident evil games have awkward controls, aiming and moving will feel very unnatural at first. Hang in there, you'll get the hang of it. It's part of the series, the controls are tight at least with 4, however, they will feel strange for the first hour.

I have always played resident evil games alone, at night. Plus I try to spend my September and Octobers playing horror games. I'm a big horror fan.

The games content is wildly imaginative and the developers put a lot of thought into encounters. Nothing like Resident Evil.

So to summarize, I recommend 1, 2, and 4. Hopefully we'll get a remake of 2 sooner or later as I said it deserves it more than, in my opinion, the lack of effort on 5 and 6.

Thanks for the thoughtful input. 4 sounds like something I'd be interested in since I'm more of a fan of action than horror. Maybe I will start there and go back to the first two if I want some more of that tension.

4 you feel isolated and alone and even though it's action you run low on resources. Very spoopy. 5+ you either aren't alone or have too much weaponry, the atmosphere is less spoopy. 1-3 are more puzzly

RE 1 and 2 survival horror with puzzles, don't expect big guns and killing everything in sight. Inventory management is crucial and most of the time running away from enemies is the best tactic.

RE 3 Improves on 1 & 2 in some ways

RE 4 Arguably one of the best games in the series, more focused on Action than survival horror. You can upgrade your guns and picking up money and treasure is vital as you will need more powerful firearms as you progress. Story is generic but passable. Enemies varied and interesting.

RE 5 shit

RE 6 even Shittier

RE 7 Please don't suck!

OP, can you use the right stick to aim or only the left stick?

I picked up 4,5 and 6 hard copy for $30 total from Amazon and they got delivered the other day. I loved all three of these games and Hope to get the rest to replay them some day.

I'm not sure why 4,5 and 6 get so much hate but I loved them and have played through them multiple times and will happily do it again.

How did you manage that deal?

I wish they had updated the controls for this release, but man they made something special with this game.

[–]asim_rizAsim_MAGNUS 0ポイント1ポイント  (0子コメント)

Resident Evil 5 was my first Resident Evil. I was ecstatic when it was released on PS4. I played the crap out of it on PS3 then finished it 5 more times on the PS4. I LOVE that game !

I recently started Resident Evil 4 & I love this one too.

That's how I feel about RE5. It doesn't have the horror aspect, but it's my favorite co-op game. I've gotten unlimited ammo on all guns and all S on all difficulties on PS3 and 360. Working on it on PS4.

[–]Anzai 0

Ive never really played a Resident Evil game properly. Thought about doing it this generation, but looking at the store there seem to be about ten different games with confusing number systems and subtitles. Seems like there's a lot of cash in releases to go with the decent stuff.

I've played 1 2 3 and 4 and then lost track like you said (kind of like I did with the Megaman series). I'd say either start at 1 or 4 to dip your toes in the water. If you can get past the tank controls, the games themselves are a lot of fun.

You should check out the remastered RE Origins Collection on PS4. Those games are gorgeous, you would have no idea that they're ~15 years old.

As someone who's never played resident evil, how does it hold up for a newcomer? Is this a good place to start the series?

yes. The graphics obviously aren't 2016 levels but their decent enough you will forget about them. Its really the environment and sound that is so immersive, especially the save/merchant areas. The game flow is like one room after another but except rooms your going through an amazing adventure and you never know what might be in the next room.

I'm playing Resident Evil 4 for the first time on GameCube now. First foray into Resident Evil games and I gotta say it definitely doesn't feel dated at all. Yes - obviously the graphics and mechanics aren't 2016 gaming level but it's still very playable and fluid. I'm really into it and I'm excited to check out more from the franchise.

It really doesn't, im having a blast playing through it again.

Same, except for this asshole sewer monster boss that wont die....O you missed one nitrogen tank well your dead.

Haha, yea he's quite a pain, though I killed him first try this playthrough just because i've already killed him like 15 times before and know the strategy.

100% approved. I had never played RE4 and still it's on of the best games I played this year. Holds up very well in my opinion. Controls were fine, an hour in I got used to them. Will definitely pickup the Origins Collection later on.

Wheres a good place to start with this series? I've been wanting to try it but I wasn't sure if there is a narrative thread through each game or if each game has it's own story.

[–]Dallas_Stars_FanKILLA-AJAM -1ポイント0ポイント  (0子コメント)

Each game has its own story pretty much. Just look up the wiki and you will be fine. Tbe story has gone to shit for the most part anyways

Ditto. I've played it on every system. As soon as they announced it for PS4 I resigned myself to buying it again. 60fps is too tempting. I'm sure it'll suck me in completely one more time.

Agreed, still feels as fun and fresh as ever! Something I love about the game is all the content it has. If you want to do everything there is to do you could easily spend 50-60 hours.

I still have this incredible game on my Wii. I think it's really the best way to experience RE4 at all. The pointer takes a few minutes to getting used to tho.

Never played it. Think i'll pick it up on ps4 or pc

RE4 gets old to me about 2/3 of the way through the game. I have played through the first half to 3/4 of RE4 at least 3 separate times throughout the years and I always lose interest. I've never finished it. I really wish I loved it. The opening areas are great.

Re-playing the ps4 version currently and it's incredible how well the game still stands up still. I just wish more of the game took place in the village, the castle didn't feel nearly as atmospheric.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica was my favorite game out of the series. It still played like RE1-3 but it had actual 3D levels instead of pre-rendered backdrops. One of the games that made me buy a Dreamcast back in the day.

No platinum is kind of a dealbreaker tbh

Usually, yes. But with this game? It doesn't even matter. I have 100% trophy completion on the PS3 version and I'm going for it again on this version.

I don't get how trophy hunting isn't better understood by now

Because in relation to 40+ million users, the percent that care about trophies is very very small.

Because some games expect you to no life them just to get a platinum. I used to be mad on Achievements but I just don't have the time anymore, kind of stopped caring to when it encourages boosting lobbies or people use glitches (looking at you Ninja Gaiden 2) to obtain them.

You won't play a game without a Plat?

I just don't understand this.

When you already own the game 3 times you probably want a better incentive to buy it yet again. A platinum would've sufficed and had me blast through it all over again. But to pay £15 for literally the same upscaled package I was given on the ps3 isn't really that great.

Personally, I find it more unusual that you would replay it for any reason OTHER than enjoyment, and that adding a plat would have changed this for you. I mean, I understand. It's just surprising.

That's because they re-release it all the time.

I hate third person shooters and i got this game for PC like a month ago or so and i adore it, i think it really understood how to build a game around its "limitations" (probably design desitions) it is one of those games that looks clunky but in reality it feels great, going to be rebuying it on PS4 soon

http://www.re4hd.com you should check this out, these guys are making the game look gorgeous I'd say current generation level of graphics

Don't you mean "resident evil 4"?

I want resident evil to go back to its re4 roots. Don't make it action packed with co-op like 5, don't make it like sucking giraffe dick bad action game that was 6, just make it like re4!

I really want to play Resident Evil 5 but i just dont like the controls

YES! I agree with you OP, 100%.

RE4 is one of the GOAT games, and you can tell just by it's addictive gameplay. I'll be the first to admit that the first few times I tried to play RE4 (first on Gamecube) I just could never get into the game due to the controls. Finally, about a year ago, I gave it another shot on the PS2. And...it clicked. I fell in love with the controls. The controls just ADDED to the gameplay/atmosphere of the game. They were specifically designed to be that way (no running/walking while shooting, slow turn movement, etc.). I beat it on the PS2, and then immediately downloaded it on PS3 just to get all the trophies. So I played it to completion back-to-back-to-back. I don't think I've EVER done that with any game (I have been gaming since the NES days). Playing through it again on PS4 and I'm still loving it. Going to 100% trophies it once more.

Are you me?

Everything you said except I had the ps3 version instead of xbox 360 applies to me ! Are you gonna play through it on Professional? I am.

This is not RE, this is dead rising

what are you talking about?

You know what i am talking about. Horde of enemies comes to you and this game called RE ? They clearly fucked up the franchise. At least name it something else.

I love the game up until Ashley. Then I want to claw my eyes out. Does anyone else wish she wasn't a part of the game?

Yea, but I realized your actually supposed to use the wait command. Makes things much more intense in the church area when your keeping track of her and the mobs of enemies.

It was and still is a good game yes, but how many fucking times will they re-re-re-release it?

As long as people keep buying.

How many times will films be released in higher definition?

Well, as someone fairly new to the series, I couldn't play it more than an hour. It is so clunky with the controls and feels horribly outdated.

I'll end up watching it on youtube or something.
