Thoughts on Schneidelin yesterday? (self.reddevils)

I was far too interested in the shite performance and I'm admittedly not great at watching and analysing games. How does everyone think he played with a midfield 3? Do you think the formation and midfield selection picked yesterday has potential to work?

Schneiderlin was okay, but nothing spectacular. He was so content sitting back just defending, leaving Herrera & Pogba to bring the ball forward for most of the match. Not a complete performance if you ask me, considering he was known for his box-to-box capabilities as a midfielder back at Southampton.

Herrera did much better, with aggression to regain possession & tried really hard to create something out of nothing. Pogba had another bad day, do hope he can show the standards he set for himself at the game against Southampton.

That was clearly schneiderlin's job to not advance too much and leave the attacking to the other 2. He also had to cover for Rojo countless times. People are saying he was invisible, he didn't do anything, is that a bad thing? He went about his job quietly and effectively. He's was the shield in front of the defence, but people want him to be running around like a headless chicken and if he doesn't, he's useless. If it's between him or fellaini, only one choice for me.

This was a problem throughout the whole formation which worries me. Schneiderlin was tied to Rojo going AWOL, while Mata drifted in to fill a space in center midfield. Something was oddly off yesterday compared to the previous matches, where there were pockets of space and places where United players crowded.

Obviously not the entire explanation, but the fullbacks are a pretty big reason for that. Not that I'm saying they're shit, I actually thought Darmian played relatively well.

But Valencia and Shaw are two ridiculously athletic freaks. They both cover so much ground up and down the wings. They go forward, yet when the ball is turned over they have the pace and the stamina to get back again. Darmian and Rojo (and tbh, probably most full backs in the league) just can't do that.

Darmian did okay. Not spectacular, but was consistently involved.

It's funny how hardly any attacks came down our right hand side from them. It was all down our left where Rojo was. Darmian did have a decent game, people won't admit that however as its not the popular thing to do.

Exactly, he was very solid defensively. There were times when there were acres of space on the right wing going forward, it was clear our players were used to Valencia bombing on there and eventually Young came on and started running into those spaces. But I wouldn't necessarily blame Darmian for that, we all know what kind of defender he is and he's good at it.

He doesn't have the physical attributes that Valencia has. So he's rarely going to commit to going all the way to the byline, knowing that he won't be able to get back again. We should be able to adapt to that, depending on which fullback is playing. Haven't really thought about it, but maybe something like playing Mkhitaryan at RW when Darmian plays, someone that will hold their width. Darmian and Mata offers no width whatsoever going forward on the RW.

Anyways, Darmian did do well defensively and I'm happy enough with his performance, especially seeing as it was his first game of the season.

Everyone was covering for fucking Rojo, this guys an idiot. I don't know why we were playing so narrow, when Memphis came on he decided to play in centrally, which didn't make sense and left that Rojo exposed. Smalling and Bailly can be a good partnership however, which was a good sign.

I thought he played very well. He won his Arial duels, won most of his time tackles, and stayed back as Herrera and Pogba pushed forward.

Shit on the ball he cant seem to be able to pass forward. Same goes for Herrera 1st pass is always backwards or sideways we dont have passers in midfield. We are slow and slugish
