What I said - to be specific- is that our country is DROWNING in debt. $20 trillion. We are headed for disaster. No one here can debate that. Debt is disaster. Debt is poison. Debt has destroyed most every nation in world history that ever went under. The key to paying down the debt is cutting government spending. We must cut. But we sure can't spend more and dig the hole deeper. I am a very creative person. I have suggested many ideas to cut the spending. One of hundreds of my ideas is to consider voting a privilege for those who pay into the system, not take out. If I owe money to a bank or credit card company, it would be a conflict of interest for me to sit on their Board and vote to lower interest charges. Right? So why do we allow people on welfare...who pay zero into the system...who only take out...to vote for the candidate who promises to pay more welfare? Isn't that a terrible conflict of interest? What's your "skin in the game?" Everyone who votes on spending, taxes, budgets should have "skin in the game." Of course everyone who gets free stuff and checks from government is going to always vote for the reckless, irresponsible jerk politician who promises to keep the welfare checks coming. Thats common sense. We can't save America or pay down the debt...thereby saving our jobs and economy...unless we find a way to cut spending. I will continue to suggest ideas for doing this. Women's contraception has nothing to do with my suggestion.

You want to take away people's voting rights? You realize people - poor people, especially, those "drains on the system" you speak of - have fought for the right to vote, both at home (suffrage, civil rights, etc.) and abroad (fight against fascism) for all of America's existence?
If you want to save America by fundamentally altering what it means to be American, you're actually the one destroying America.

Why do we let business owners who deduct expenses to the point of paying no taxes vote?
Oh yeah. Because its a right. We wont save America by trampling on people's rights. America is for all the citizens, not just the ones who "pay in". That is a disgusting attitude to hold. As in, actually stomach churning, that you can think of taking away someone's right to vote because they fell on hard times.

Jesus Christ what a scary proposition. Why don't we just open up debtor's prison again while we're at it.

the house of lords called- they LOVE your idea
[–]Ochd12 [score hidden]  (0 children)
Women's contraception has nothing to do with my suggestion.
Then why did you bring it up?
This also completely ignores people who have paid into the system for years, only to get some bad luck.
Or the people who are on welfare who are trying everything they can to get off and dislike the system that helped put them there to start with.
"Of course there would be a conflict of interest" is pretty silly reasoning.

So you want to get implement poll taxes and disenfranchise the poor? Edit: the disabled, college students, the elderly as well. Any more?
[–]WhyDoges [score hidden]  (1 child)
No he doesn't want the poor or middle class to vote. Middle class people have home payments
[–]johnthebold2 [score hidden]  (0 children)
I've been thinking more and realize he wants to disenfranchise even a lot of young people too. College students don't pay in much either.
[–]Modoger [score hidden]  (0 children)
Also the disabled.
[–]irondeepbicycle [score hidden]  (0 children)
Can't you just feel his love for the Constitution radiating from his call for poll taxes?
[–]GhostOfJebsCampaign [score hidden]  (2 children)
If you're not a tax payer you shouldn't vote. It's as simple as that.
[–]grodoudou2 [score hidden]  (0 children)
the ghosts of dead nobles called.. they want their mediaeval attitudes back
[–]relevantlife [score hidden]  (3 children)
This is a terrible response. No wonder the Libertarian party never gets any traction....
It's a conflict of interest to support candidates who promise you things, eh? So every millionaire who votes Republican because they promise to lower taxes, in the same way, has a conflict of interest?
Or is it only the poor you wish to disenfranchise when they support candidates who help their specific situation?
What you said here is essentially this: "My ideas can never win if poor people are allowed to vote, so I have to find a creative idea to disenfranchise them." If your ideas are so shitty you can't win unless you take away people's right to vote, you should never hold elected office.

No wonder the Libertarian party never gets any traction....
What does this guy have to do with the libertarian party??? Can we not get insulted in every thread that we don't even have anything to do with
[–]relevantlife [score hidden]  (0 children)
He was the Libertarian VP nominee 4 years ago. That's pretty relevant.
[–]brokenfeet82 [score hidden]  (0 children)
He was the Libertarian Party's Vice-Presidential nominee in 2008.
[–]WhyDoges [score hidden]  (0 children)
What the fuck? Have you ever met a poor person ever? Do toyou think people enjoy being poor overall? Also with that logic you shouldn'5 vote since you have skin in the game by paying taxes, so you'll vote for whoever says no taxes.
[–]carlclashfan [score hidden]  (0 children)
By historical levels, the debt is actually at a manageable percentage of GDP. But no, I'm sure removing the franchise from citizens is a perfectly logical solution.
[–]grodoudou2 [score hidden]  (0 children)
so if a politician promises something to you and he/she fulfills it should you not be allowed to vote because of a conflict of interest
[–]darkknightwinter [score hidden]  (0 children)

You have 0 idea what you're talking about.
[–]madjoy [score hidden]  (1 child)
Genuine question: would you support a proposal that would only allow male property-owners to vote again?
[–]grodoudou2 [score hidden]  (0 children)
*white Christian ones of course
[–]Jkid [score hidden]  (0 children)
Problem is welfare does not exist. Especially for single men and women without children. You can get section 8 anymore unless you have children because they're all under funded and the are under a affordable housing crisis that the federal, state, and local governments have refused to address.
[–]DelusionalSocialist [score hidden]  (0 children)
But that works for any group.
To avoid the cliche of bankers ruining economies: why allow toy manufactures who put dangerous lead and arsenic in their toys to vote for politicians that will allow them putting dangerous chemicals in their toys? After all, a toddler eating a toy filled with arsenic is worse than a family with bad finances.
Why allow car manufacturers that don't pass any emission tests to vote for politicians who promise to get rid of regulations regarding emissions? Climate change is at least as dangerous as debt.
I could go on for hours. There's thousands of groups that could ruin the economy or even worse, the planet.
Spending on welfare fraud doesn't come close to missed income due to tax evasion. Better stop rich folks and CEOs from voting as well then?
[–]Guac_Bowl_Merchant [score hidden]  (0 children)
The key to paying down the debt is cutting government spending.
So you didn't know the government also controls its own revenue then? What about a balanced approach of both raising taxes and cutting spending?
I am a very creative person
Yet you didn't think creatively enough about this supposed MASSIVE issue to consider that we might also raise more revenue instead of only cutting debt to solve a debt crisis.
Our tax revenue as share of GDP is well below national average:
Nobody who wants to have an honest discussion about debt, who honestly thinks it's a massive problem, is going to leave out raising revenue as a major contributor.
[–]Sun-Forged [score hidden]  (0 children)
Skin in the game is the government's ability to reinstate the draft.
The majority of people that don't contribute to the tax system aren't poor because they want to be. Some of the hardest solutions our country needs to make won't happen with the politicians ignoring the needs of those at the bottom. Which is exactly what would happen if they didn't need there vote.
Your proposal is asinine.
[–]downvotetheplanet [score hidden]  (0 children)
"drowning in debt" ... We're owed about as much as we owe, and most of our loans go to China. It's like fiscal conservatives tricked you by only telling you the part of the story that fit their narrative
[–]chunder_everywhere [score hidden]  (0 children)
This might be the most insane thing I've ever read. Taking away people's right to vote isn't going to make them magically get out of whatever situation has them counting on government assistance
[–]Grsz11 [score hidden]  (0 children)
Then how do you support Trump's economic policies which add trillions more debt?
