Have you ever even read a single post on this sub before?

No one has touched on this yet at all, should be full of discussion

Ok I'll give you the short version, if you want the long version then click on the search option because it has been discussed a lot :)

  • He hasn't played well as a 10 before

  • People think Rooney is there to cover for Pogba and others when he goes past him

  • Pogba's better performances have come in a4-3-3 when he has players to do defensive work for him

  • Pogba would likely play better with nobody congesting the space in front of him.

He hasn't played well as a 10 before

How often has he really played there? I know he did for a time when Allegri experimented with 4 at the back in his first season before he abandoned it for a 3-5-2, but even that was in a diamond not a 4-2-3-1 which isn't really the same.

I don't think we should dismiss the possibility of him doing well there based on what happened in a few games for Juventus two years ago in a different formation anyway.

If you're going to drop Rooney anyway (which would happen if we played Pogba there) you might as well just set up the formation to be similar to when he excelled at Juve and have someone alongside him and another player behind him, rather than just giving him another crack at 10.

That's definitely option 1.

But 4-2-3-1 also provides more defensive solidity than a 4-3-3 if the right players are in the 2 and both sit.

In a 4-3-3 the one sitting midfielder needs to be this defensive behemoth who can cover everyone (assuming our 2 CM's are going to be Herrera and Pogba) while the two CM's push forward.

We don't have that player. We have the defensively smart but slow as fuck Carrick, Blind who totally failed at playing that role when he came to United, Fellaini who doesn't have anything like the positioning for it and Schneiderlin who's a mediocrity and Mourinho clearly doesn't rate.

If we'd bought Kante or had a player like Fernandinho then sure, but we don't.

By playing 2 sitting midfielders behind Pogba we'd compensate for that we don't have any 1 individually great holding midfielder.

I would be interested in seeing how a midfield of Herrera behind Schneiderlin and Pogba worked.

It would get steamrolled probably by the better teams but against a lot of teams in the prem I think it could work and then you could play the 4231 rather than the 433 in the bigger games. It'll never happen though.

Ideally we will actually buy a good defensive midfielder because we don't have anyone and even if Fosu-Mensah could become good enough to play that role, it won't be for a long time.
