You know what is so fire though - and this shows how amazing the Somali community is - older Somali dudes and older Somali women in the crowd was grabbing, pushing back and yelling at the youngins who were going off.. And they listened.

Amazingly strong community.

Right?? They rent the Convention Center every year to honor high school graduates. The whole community is pulling for their kids to graduate and make something of themselves. I've got nothing but respect for them.

The way the community polices itself is fucking amazing. I remember I was smoking hookah in a park with ten GROWN ASS Somali dudes (early 20s) and when two random old Somali ladies walked by they all pretended they weren't smoking and the old ladies berated them for a few minutes.

If some white lady I didn't know told me to not smoke tobacco I would laugh lol

Has anyone seen these shows yet? Are they available?

[–]selfcontrolapp[S] 5ポイント6ポイント  (0子コメント)

I don't even think they started filming.

It's strange how slow the news moves sometimes. With Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook I was seeing all this from my Somali friends on Saturday afternoon. No press until Monday night lol.

Good on them for standing up and letting others know they're not going to be cornered into a stereotype. I have to respect their passion and determination to improve their community.

So, yes...I agree.
I do however want to just play devils advocate here, and say. Why not also tell the story of the very real recruitment and very real danger that the ideology of extremism represents?
I live in Minneapolis, I went to a high school with one of the largest somali populations in the city. I work with a lot of them. So, my gut reaction is to say "Oh god, not another portrayal of Somalis as terrorists!" But then I had to stop and think, ya but....what is the story they are trying to tell?
I really haven't found much information yet. But from the sounds of it, it doesn't sound like it's aiming to paint "Somalis'" as terrorists, but rather, discuss the very real issue of recruitment and radicalization in the U.S.

Anyway. Just a question, or thought. I'm not Somali, and I hate talking to idiots outside of Minneapolis who hear that we have the largest Somali population in the U.S. and say things that are stupid and racist.
....but....
It's not like radicalization doesn't/isn't happening.

Like most people I've grown up with a bunch of Somali friends. Each one of them has a friend or brother or uncle or aunt or someone who was killed back in East Africa. To them, it is a very real possibility that a majority population will get angry with them and start killing, raping, taking their land and ultimately, kick them out of their homes. It happened in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Eritrea.

So why not let HBO tell the story, because one of the presidential candidates is going around, referring to Muslims as "they" and saying they need to leave the country to thunderous applause. This follows a pattern they have seen over and over again in different countries. It is a very real concern for them that angry mobs of people are going to start raping their sisters and killing their brothers. You and me might think that's extreme but I doubt our families have been cut in half over 30 years of war, famine and disease. You might understand how they could be little worked up over a film crew showing up and saying we want to convince America you're all suicide bombers, or suicide bomber sympathizers.

Ya, I 100% understand this. It's the reason I think they have a right to be concerned.
I was just saying, I can't really find a great synopsis of the show, and in my head, I can see a show, that discusses the issue, but DOESN'T villainize the Muslim / Somali community. But instead, helps people see them for what they are. Human beings, with hopes and dreams, who have chosen to live in the U.S. and are hoping to raise their children in a country that accepts them, and understands them. Often? Things like this in popular culture can (rarely, I admit) but they can help people identify with the Somali / Muslim communities. I was just trying to suggest, maybe this show would do that? Again, I can't really find a good synopsis of what the show will actually do though.

Because war refugees who are even being oppressed in America still are probably the last people on the planet that should be pointed at and called out for extremism, especially in America thru a Hollywood picture that will likely reach many Americans.

How do you know which schools bave the largest amounts of Somali students? (Or any race for that matter)

[–]CivEZ 6ポイント7ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm going to assume this question was in ernest and not you trying to be condescending. The state releases this information publicly. Here's a website where you can look up any school in the state, and see the demographics, graduation rates, etc.

MN School Demographics

When did riots = passion?

Were the Milwaukee rioters just being passionate about burning down their own neighborhood?

[–]drozpuke 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

These protesters were not burning down their neighborhood, they love the West Bank and treat it as anyone would treat a home they care for.

HBO, eh? I hope they show Somali boobies. There must be some hot chicks hidden under all those clothes.

K'naan left the stage before making a comment about "ignorant" people.

Well now he's a total cunt in my book.

Canadian Somalis don't do as well in western life as Minnesotan Somalis; the canadian systematic racism has shut down progress for them. Then K'naan comes here and refers to Somalis who are getting somewhere in life and being accomplished as "ignorant"....

K'naan only got somewhere in the media by pushing a negative stereotype against his own people. I hope in the future all venues refuse to book his shows. He deserves a good kick in the genitals. K'naan is a god damn lawn jockey.
